Re: 1U Esoteric EQ
i've seen the audix 35102 done in a 1RU enclosure..its pretty "nevey"..I have a couple and like them a lot..
manley enhanced pultec, peq-b
you may be able to fit two or one TFK W695's in 1RU..
Sphere 930 modules
you could fit api 500 stuff too but you would need to find the less common rack or custom one..

Re: 1U Esoteric EQ
You can get vintage German & Swiss EQ modules racked in a 1U enclosure from http://www.vintagecity.de
They do really nice work.
The Telefunken, ANT, Neumann & Filtek stuff all has slightly different characters. Nice stuff for reasonable money (although the exchange rate with the Euro isn't the best right now - times the Euro prices by about $1.31 to get an idea of current costs).
Best regards,

Re: 1U Esoteric EQ
I was thinking something prefab. I got a bunch of projects on the bench now.
I have a 1U space open in my eq rack and thought it would be cool to fill it with something. I don't really have any specific needs but something esoteric or "different" might be nice.

Might look for an older Focusrite Green, or the Joe Meekualizer.
Mono or stereo in 1 space?

Stereo would be cool, but mono would mean more bang for the money.

Funny. As I'm reading through the posts, I'm thinking, "He should just get a PQ3!" and then I got to your last post.thedug wrote:Anybody know much about the furman pq3?

I like 'em. A little grainy (that's a good thing) and plenty of color. They've gotten more expensive in last couple of years, but worth checking out. There are a couple of versions: the older green-face and the newer black-face. I have no idea if there are any internal differences.

Re: 1U Esoteric EQ
It's tough to say whether you would get more bang for the buck with mono or stereo. I understand the thought process that a mono unit for the same price would be a better EQ, but then a stereo unit would be useable in stereo on things like drum overheads or other stereo pairs, and also on submixes, or even your final mix. So the additional uses a stereo unit could cover would translate to more bang in my opinion. Naturally a 'dual mono' stereo would be the best in this regard as it would also be able to equalize two mono signals independently, as well as the above uses.
As for the Furman, I can't say I've ever used one though they certainly look intriguing. Symetrix no longer makes their 5-band 551E mono 1-unit equalizer, but that is a ridiculously nice unit. It has sweepable high & low roll-offs and five bands of fully parametric peak/notch filters, all of which can sweep through the entire frequency range (with the help of the x1, x0.1, x10 switch) and a bypass switch so you can compare the original signal. It's a clean EQ so whatever color you get will be what you dial in.
