Tom Dowd documentary on Sundance Channel
If you have Sundance Channel, keep an eye out for the Tom Dowd documentary film!!
I taped it earlier this week and just finished watching it. That movie is an aspiring/practicing Recording Engineer/Producer pure rock fantasy, man!
Super great profile of a true legend in the field. No one on this board has never heard a Tom Dowd track, and odds are he is responsible for at least two all-time classic favorite tunes in your collection. That should say it all.
Here are some future airings:

Boy oh boy, do I like that movie. He was an amazing personality. It's quite startling how satisfying the thing is on a pure geek level--there's no dumbing down of recording technology and philosophy for a mass audience, it's all there, perfectly clear. My wife stayed awake for the whole thing!

I was amazed at how good it was, I recently saw it on DVD. I love the Ray Charles bits, "it's cool to have the 8-track and this and that, but man, at the end of the day, maaaan, how - does - it - sound.....?" Tom Dowd seemed to be the nicest fuckin' guy yoiu could ever meet, aside from his talent.

Oh yes baby! That movie was amazing. It was very cool to see somebody who is totally THE MAN! I never saw any doubt in him, like he knew exactly what he was put on the planet to do. And a wonderful human being to boot. Something to aspire to as a person, not just an engineer/producer.

Great DVD. His story is great. I didn't know about all his accomplishments.
He was one of the first to use 8 track machines.
Helped design the first faders. No more big round knobs.
He worked on research for the atom bomb. Yes really.
Lots of great artists that he produced or engineered, that they interview also.

Re: Tom Dowd documentary on Sundance Channel
A buddy loaned me the DVD this weekend, I watched it yesterday before heading off to a session...it should be mandatory viewing for anyone seriously interested in audio engineering and producing. Now I need to get my own copy!
