I know that the distorted bass sound on head on the door was a boss heavy metal pedal

Simon Gallup pretty much always plays a Thunderbird though an SVT, with a pick, with some chorus, and pretty high up on the neck.

That guy really does have great tone.

The latest album has an accompanying DVD of them in the studio, I swear there was an SVT and a fliptop in there.

The typical Simon Gallup tone seems very Stingray to me. though I know he's used Hollowbody Gibsons and Thunderbirds. Thunderbirds have a similar growl to the Stingray.

He's also used Peavey amps at one point.

The Bass VI wasn't used so much for the bass lines. It was often a lead line that went with the bass.

Flanging, chorusing and a little smidge of drive helps. Play chords and play with new, bright strings.

Pick close to the bridge.
