I've actually seen two warring Nine Inch Nails fan boards go at it. That is pretty amusing. It's a game of who can be more cynical and nihlistic whilst hurtling insults on each other's boards.

If what's all true??? What kind of narrow-minded bullshit??? Derogatory things like what??? Nobody has actually explained what's being said about Tape Op.cowtrax wrote:If that's all true then screw 'em. That kind of narrow-minded bullshit is infantile.
Very, very few people would say derogatory things like what you all are describing to another person's face...
Maybe Kenny's right.
Re: Tape Op trashed on Motu Mac listserv
OK, I started this thread because I wanted to vent about the stupid crap over there on Motu-Mac, not because vengeance was called for.
I usually delete it because it's very anal and all about the minutia of Digital Performer... But in the last few days there must have been a dozen or two messages about Tape Op. Some people defended Tape Op, others whined about the anti-digital luddites, then it somehow morphed into a rant against people who don't like Steely Dan.
That's from memory, I'm really not gonna go dig in the archives to quote accurately.
I just thought it might be funny to post here for the two other people who noticed. Or the three of us, however many.
It would be far stupider to go over there and make trouble, so I whined over here, far removed from the people I'm whining about. Just like they did.
No big deal, really, and not worth searching for the offending comments.

It's a hypothetical comment on my part. Hence the use of "IF".rhythm ranch wrote:If what's all true??? What kind of narrow-minded bullshit??? Derogatory things like what??? Geez.
My comments aren't aimed at MOTU-MAC in particular, but the kind of silly human beings flingng anonymous insluts at each other when they never would in a face-to-face situation.
IF, I said. if.

TapeOp is a bit of a weird mix. It can be brutally honest, but it can
also be painfully egotistical. Lots of indie work is spotlighted where
the people are just too cool for their own good but really aren't any
good at all. For a long time there was that pervading attitude across
the magazine of "if it hasn't passed through tubes it's gotta be crap"
and "if it's passed through a computer then that's not real recording"
-- however in the past year or so they've started to come around a bit.
I still find the actual meat of the content somewhat hit and miss, but
still read it regularly for the variety of opinions and ideas. I don't
have to agree with everything I read. I appreciate it being less
glossy and advertiser-driven than some of the other rags.

actually my biggest beef with TapeOp is the layout - it feels like it
was laid out (fonts, etc.) by an amateur and it really hurts my eyes
(and head) to read it. The content for the most part is fairly
informative and interesting, but I know what you mean about sometimes
being "too cool" for it's own good. And what's with the anti-Steely Dan
thing?!?
3:
Well I'm sure no one really cares what either of us thinks about Steely Dan.
That wasn't my point. These guys had previously been known to listen to Steely
Dan without becoming ill. Suddenly, out of the blue, they hated them. Now I
know why.
They were only able to switch from their 1/2" Otari 8 track to Nuendo only when
it became clear the TapeOp allowed the use of computers.
I think TapeOp is fine, taken with a grain of salt.

I really do not see this as a trashing at all. The rest of the related threads (about 20 or so) are people saying how great Tape Op is. Hardly something to start a war over...

Sorry if it seemed like I was picking on you, it was not my intention.
I just felt like there were zero details upon which to base any opinions. Thanks Milkman for posting the info. I agree, it's no big deal.
P.S. tiger vomit, I'm 47 and hate Steely Dan (although, naming your band after a dildo does earn a certain amount of respect ).

No problemo! I was just clarifying that my snap was based on a general sense of possibility, and my experience with other dumb anonymous quarrels I've seen. ("Internet Bravado" - I'm gonna use that, thanks Nipsy...) Last thing I wanna do is start a fight here!rhythm ranch wrote:cowtrax, cowtrax wrote:It's a hypothetical comment on my part. And yes, thanks Milkmansound, for posting those excerpts. Hardly seems like any real bashing to me.
My original point still stands, though - that Internet Bravado is petty, and I can't stand it.

I hope there is a more positive attitude somewhere in TapeOp's forums than this vitriolic, paranoid shit.... seriously.

Re: Tape Op trashed on Motu Mac listserv
I'm on the Motu-Mac board only because it's quick-fix, free tech support. Usually I just delete the posts as quick as I get them. But sometimes, when I'm stuck in the digital prison of my own making, they give me the key to escape. They're mostly dorks but where would the world be without them?
Re: Tape Op trashed on Motu Mac listserv
I heard they have weapons of mass distruction over there..... Mybe we can get Bush to invade them and make them have an election. After reading those vicious comments about TapeOp's layout I'm ready to declare WAR!
Go get em W.

Listen -- I grew up in the 60's. I have a pony tail. I like Steely Dan. I drive a Volvo. You guys just don't respect your elders -- guys like me. I don't like your attitudes one bit. You criticize everyone I idolize -- Paul Simon, Crosby Stills and Nash, Eddie Kramer and above all -- the Grateful Dead. These guys were more than just musicians -- they were part of a movement --- which I can't say for your "experimental indie rock" -- Bah!!!
