The 3630 Alesis Mod Warning!
The 3630 Alesis Mod Warning!
Hello Great mag and great messsege board.
Anyway I decided to do the mod on my 3630 alesis today and found out that they are not all alike. When I got mine opened up and all apart I realized that in the magazine where you see all those jumpers mine has resistors in all of those spots.
Alesis must have made some changes in the units some where along the way.
So if you are going to try this mod do not take the front cover off of your unit till you look inside to see if you have a newer model or not.

Just saw your post on the 3630 mod. I'm in Bloomington - do you work in a local studio?

They may just be 0 ohm resistors AKA fancy lookin' jumpers. Can you post a pict?Recorder wrote: When I got mine opened up and all apart I realized that in the magazine where you see all those jumpers mine has resistors in all of those spots.

No I have already put the unit back together and back in the rack.
I cant believ they would spend the money on fake resistors to fill a whole that used just a peice of wire before. Im guessing that the board in the 3630 was used by manufactures of other compressors like dbx and maybe they made some changes along the way after the first ones got such a bad rap.

If the boards are stuffed by an automated machine, sometimes they have to use a 0 ohm ressitor because some machines cant automate a jumper, so they use a 0 ohm because they can load it in the machine. It just has a single black band on it if memory serves correctly.

Well shit now I am going to have to take it all apart again and look.
Re: The 3630 Alesis Mod Warning!
Ok you are correct they are just back bands on the resistors.
Now do I dare cut them?

if its a single black band, its thhe same a wire jumper, so proceed as you would.

Done now all I have to do is put it back together. If anyone is thinking about doing this mod there is no reason to take the front cover off to do this. If you have a small pair of dikes they will fit in there just fine to cut the jumper. Also there is no reason to disconnect the cable that is mentioned in the mag article.

I did the more extensive mods and can confirm that there were in fact several revisions to the 3630. Mine were rev D I think.
Anyway - wait until next month and do the full mod. Trust me - its completely worth it!

It kinda bothered me that the article encouraged people to just curt the jumpers. That's sloppy how about you heat up the iron and actually pull the jumpers out. I just think it's kinda ghetto.
