Man I'm hatin life right now...I just started MIDI classes and labs and I gotta say the labs are a huge pain in the ass because I can't seem to retain info in there. Remembering how to work the gear is really kickin my ass (granted, I'm only 2 labs in, but, nothing has ever been this difficult for me at first...I just can't remember shit!)

Re: M1D1
do you take notes those always help me remember things..
remember MIDI units will accept or ignore a status byte depending on what channel the machine is set to receive..

CV is definitely fun to play with, but boy is it pricey to pick up a Moog these days.
As for MIDI, I find that it is helpful to remember that when you break it all down to its most basic and fundamental component, you have a clock that just sits there counting time, and shoots at little messages that say, "hey you, turn this ON" or "hey you, turn this OFF", and every now and then, "hey you, turn this to 127". (and you can read that as any number between 0 and 127)
But otherwise, that's it man, that's MIDI. It rolls along, counting time, gets to bar-4, beat-1 and says, "yo, channel 16, turn on note #61!"
Yeah, as you go along, you'll talk about all sorts of controllers and patch changes and tricks and problems. You'll want to use a sustain pedal. And that is just a command to "switch the pedal ON", and then "switch the pedal OFF". Want to change the volume? "yo, set that controller to 94"

Re: M1D1
yeah...i suppose all that is simple enough. it's working the gear that's gettin me cuz it's dark in the room and i can't see and it's quiet and i'm tired by the time I get to the class and....i just gotta spend extra time in the lab messin with it. understanding the concepts is fine but if i can't remember what button does what on the master or the rackmounts or logic then what good does it do me? don't worry, by the time I'm done with this class I'll love MIDI like I love my own child.

sorry..I didnt intend to be mean..syrupcore wrote:that was just downright mean.BEARD_OF_BEES wrote:remember MIDI units will accept or ignore a status byte depending on what channel the machine is set to receive..
A MIDI processor will look at the most significant bit to see if it is a 1 or a 0..status bytes start with a 1..data bytes start with a 0..a status byte is the first word in a digital MIDI message..used as an identifier or an instruction..
im just trying to give some tips..
