Yes, but they are usually in distant countries and are rumored to embezzle money once they marry you...

Contact Fender or talk to an experienced local repair shop. I don't think they've been around for more than 5-8 years, so it should be easy from the sn.

Just curious, why do you need to date so recent an instrument?

o.k...here's the full story.
i collect vintage gear.
my girlfriend wants to buy a jagstang.
i don't recommend buying a jagstang for "investment"
but she wants one.
so i told her if she wants one so bad, then she should get the first year made.
she has found one.
so now she wants to date it.

thanks for your help on this.
i'll let her know.

I think you have the right vibe on that one. I wouldn't consider it an "investment" by any means, if it's the guitar I'm thinking of. OTH, if you got a stock mid 60's Jag, or even a mustang, you would have one hell of a guitar.

Most fender serial numbers have a letter which stands for a certain decade and then the first number after the letter is the year from that decade. I know that Z stands for 2000's, E for 1980's, and i think it's N for the 1990's.

Example: N673458 would be 1996.

If I am remembering this correctly you should be able to find the date.

You can determine the date at www.fender.com - You'll have to dig around for the right page, but it's there.
