Studio lighting

Post by inverseroom » Fri Nov 14, 2003 10:48 am

OK, I was trying to light my keyboard rack, bought these little halogen "Accent lights" and nearly set the place on fire, they were so hot. Returned them, bought Christmas lights, and used the money I saved to buy the kids lunch. Christmas lights! Mellow, cheap, and designed not to ever set anything on fire.

I know, I know--I am the last person on this message board to discover this.

You can also buy a colored "party light", take a key and scratch off some of the paint, then put the light in a cheap thrift store lamp with a lampshade.

The scatches project a cool texture onto the lampshade.

Instant fun!

Try rope lighting too. It looks pretty cool if you have it hidden below or behind something.

Rope lighting scares me - it smells like burnt plastic when you turn it on. I've been using goo lights from Target.

I light my studio by a Yule log, kept alight by continually tossing kerosine on it. Festive!
HEY! Who forgot they bag?

I used to do that but the marshmellows we had been roasting got into all the gear so we got ants to eat the marshmellows then the ants became a problem and we got anteaters when they ate the ants we shot them with bows and arrows..

Hi- A couple of rope lighting questions--
do they use transformers?

Can you use less than the whole 18 feet?

Thanks,
Kevin

All well and fine, but how do you deal with the heat! I am looking for good lighting. Suggestions for minimal heat and maximum spread?

Those cocoon lamps Sky is talking about are way cool - if you have the space and the 60 bucks, at least check 'em out (if you can stand going to ikea...)

i guess those japanese lanten type things could work..the cocoon thing is basically that..soft spread but not usually very powerfull..you could get a grip stand and a bunch of wire with light sockets along it and then get soft bulbs and buy sheets of off white translucent vinyl and make walls of soft light..that would be fresh..hmm

Ikea has really sweet looking lamps for super cheap... put 25 watt bulbs in 'em and get that nice almost-dim studio lighting look.

Or you could get the five-armed floor lamp from target with each bulb on a gooseneck, and translucent plastic shades around each bulb, for $30, it's quite nice... I think the idea's stolen from a Michael Graves design that cost $300 at a foofy furniture store years ago :)

Right now I just have the one my wife bought, but I don't see any transformers - at least nothing of the traditional wall wart variety.

The ones we have can be cut at pre-set lengths (I think every 3 feet). If you look at a box in the store it should have that info on the side.
