MOTU 896 latency

Post by logancircle » Wed Feb 25, 2004 9:08 am

Please help! I am running DP4 with an iBook G4 and MOTU 896 and there's always latency. There's supposed to be a no-latency monitoring option, but I can't locate it. I've gone into every menu in DP4 that seems relavent and had no luck. Changing studio size and record/playback timing doesn't help. I searched DP4 help and the word 'latency' doesn't even appear once. Any hints? Thanks

hI..

The no latency thing is referring to the headphone monitor output on the motu. there is a knob for volume to monitor your playing while recording. Just go in to performer and turn the input monitoring off in the software and use only the monitor on the 896. you won't hear plugins until you playback though. hope this helps.

First of all, DP is really not ment to be used on a laptop. Second, Adjusting the buffer size is a good way to fix the latency. But I bet if you used audiodesk and/or beefed up your ram it would be fine.

this probably belongs in the *&^% computer forum.

That said, you can either 1) RTFM for the 896 (I have one, and it's in there) 2) look for the motu control panel, as that's where that particular control should be. Or at least, that's where that control is on the pc side.

AHA! That input monitor tip sounds right on--I'm gonna try it after work. Not meant for laptop? I never heard that before. Why not for laptop?

YES it will help. just turn off the input monitoring in DP and go to the motu control panel and tell it which input on the 896 you want to be the monitored input( you can only monitor one input at a time)

best. -Michael

I will figure this out soon, but if I can only monitor one input at a time, does this mean I can still monitor the other tracks? Sorry, I'm still getting to know DP. Thanks.

I'm pretty sure you need to monitor through Cue-Mix and not DP.
But that's just a guess.

logancircle,

yes you will still be able to monitor outputs from DP. the only thing you are doing is turning off the monitor inputs in DP. This does not effect playback.

bniesz,

you are correct. cue mix plus is the what motu calls their one channel "monitor while tracking" system that is part of the 896.
