Try some Karate, Johnny Cash, Songs: Ohia, Promise Ring (Nothing Feels Good), Willie Nelson and then to illustrate the anger as well as the loss try At the Drive-In's song Napoleon Solo from their album In/Casino/Out. It always gets me.

i'd like to qualify jebjerome's post by specifying that it is the instrumental of "ride into the sun" that you want. way more appropriate. i forget which album it's on- one of those random ones.

i'd also like to say that i'm right there with you, soundfinesse. and i've found that in this situation, sometimes the classics are what you want. sort of like comfort food. i'm talking about otis redding, motherfucker. and johnny cash's version of "goodnight irene." that's what i'm talking about.

also, the ballads off of the new ween album have been doing it for me- talking bout "i don't want it" and "if you could save yourself you'd save us all." then, when it's time to get over it, kick a little ass, and drown your sorrows in some good old-fashioned whores and coke, you skip on back to track one- "it's gonna be a long night," and you're good to go.

Very sorry about your loss. I agree with the Red House Painters suggestion.

Johnny Cash--"Long Black Veil"
Tammy Wynette--"Apartment Number 9"
Nico--almost ANYTHING. The "Chelsea Girls" album especially, some of her later ones are downright bleak.
Edith Piaf--"Non, Je ne Regrette Rien"

If you're looking at Red House Painters, go ahead and pick up Sun Kil Moon/Ghosts of the Great Highway while you're at it.

Swans - anything from Children of God onwards, including the spinoff bands Angels of Light, Body Lovers and World of Skin.

Just don't have any sharp objects around.

TapeOpLarry wrote:"Holocaust" from Big Star's Third. Kills me.
Oh god, definitely. Actually most of Third/Sister Lovers is a good bet - I was thinking just the other day that some of these songs are the most depressing I've ever heard.

I agree with most of the suggestions so far. I'll just add:

Idaho - Alas or Year After Year
Slowdive - Pygmalion or Just For A Day
Lou Reed - Magic And Loss

I really like listening to these two if I'm in a reflective mood:

Debussy - Piano Preludes
Bach - Suites for Solo Cello (played by Pablo Casals)

Even if you don't think you like classical music, please check them out.

I will fourth the Red House Painters.

I will also suggest Nick Drake's Five Leaves Left album.

Mercury Rev's Deserter's Songs hit me as a pretty heavy CD when i first heard it. A friend played "Holes" for me the day that I put my cat to sleep and it just wrecked me.

"Silver Wing"s by Merle Haggard

This Mortal Coil's It'll End in Tears record, with it's heart-wrenching covers of above mentioned "Holocaust" and "Kanga-Roo."

Lots of Beach Boys including "Warmth of the Sun" "God Only Knows" "Caroline No" "Til I Die" and to me the saddest of all sad songs, "Surf's Up"

I'm sorry to hear of your loss. I had a very bad year last year and I lost my father, and music is one of the only minor comforts to deal with it.

anything by Tarentel
anything by L'altra
Mogwai - rock action
I Hate Myself - s/t
Explosions In The Sky - the earth is not a dead, cold place

Instrumental music is more sad than music with words to me.
