King Tubby, Channel 1, mid 1970's Dub??
King Tubby, Channel 1, mid 1970's Dub??
i'm interested in learning more about what i'm hearing in mid 70's dub...what equipment and techniqes were employed...particularly what delay they may have typically used? There's a picture of some of the studio gear in "the sound of channel one...king tubby connection" but i can't make some of it out and i'm not sure what i could glean from that if i could.
Any tips on Lee Scratch Perry's gear and techniques would be appreciated too.
Thanks!

king tubby is one of my favorites. he did build a lot of his own stuff, but i know that the delays he used (at least in the 70s) were tape delays... most probably made out of regular 2-track decks. (you know how to do that, right? just take the signal off the read head while you're recording, and feed a little bit of it back into the input if you want a repeating echo...)
i love the "flying cymbals", and don't forget the drums-through-phaser sound...

I think Tubby used RE201's. Hence the crashing boingkrannnchhhhh sound when he'd pick it up and shake the springs...

The boingggg sound was also used at live dances in Jamaica, the DJ would kick the reverb unit... not sure which came first, the recording or the live thing.
Tubby definitely used the Space Echo, as did Lee Perry. ... talk about minimilist recording -- many of Lee Perry's greatest recordings were done with a Tascam 4-track, a Tangent board, Mutron III, Mutron Biphase, and the Roland RE-201. And, lots of herb and talent.

Lee Perry also used an early Soundcraft board. How do I know this? I have the same board and everyone says, "That's Lee Perry's board..."

Re: King Tubby, Channel 1, mid 1970's Dub??
King Tubby is alive and recording in Chicago. SS
Re: King Tubby, Channel 1, mid 1970's Dub??
Tubby didn't really record - he mixed other people's tracks mostly (and while I guess you technically record the final mix, it's not the same as tracking.)
