I don't think I have ever recorded handclaps without stealing that move. It is getting to the pont now, where when we record songs I can't wait to record handclaps, they are my favorite thing to record.coniferouspine wrote:Goofiest post in the thread:
You know that scene in "The Kids Are Alright" where they're recording hand claps on "Who Are You" and Moon is screwing around making faces and twirling his hands and stuff? I did that with my band one time when we recorded handclaps around a mic and the results were fabulous. People were trying so hard not to laugh that it made that "one guy who's slightly off" effect come out even better. I'm serious. If you're going to do a handclap overdub, try and make it as much fun as possible. It's clapping, fer cryin' out loud! Make it a contest to see who can make the other guy laugh and screw up, while making it to the fadeout without cracking up yourself.
teach me how to do hand claps

You should come to Australia it's national pride to clap on the 1 and the 3wing wrote:interesting fact: did you know in japan they actually have hand-clapping lessons? i don't mean for audio production, i mean for average people to learn how to clap to songs on time, since apparently many have a hard time with that. so they actually have classes and exercises on learning to clap to songs correctly and on time. heheh...
Cheers,

Re: teach me how to do hand claps
let me reccomend having a click track twice as fast as where you want the claps- if you are clapping on the quarter note, have an eight note click going on. or maybe just the high hat mic insanely high in the headphones.
Having something going on in the spaces between claps helps people regulate their tempo better- ask any drummer who can play to a click track.

marcus-
agreed re: lots of cymbals. it was an issue in tracking, i had 4 tracks i think for drums. working on 16 track, and they intended 4 part vocal harmonies and tons of overdubs on all the songs - it was rough to figure out. 2 spaced ambient, 1 OH (beyer m500 behind the head - not my first choice, but he was so heavy on the cymbals in relation to the drums, i needed something to darken it a bit) and mono FOK, nevaton 51. it was all done in the same room, my band's practice space.
thanks dave, gtrs was through my marshall combo in a makeshift iso booth formed of 2 office partitions, close mic beyer 201, ambient ie 3ft back oktava 52.
the band has mp3s of everything from the recordings here pre-mastered:

it looks like you can buy stuff here:

while you're on the page do yourself a favor and download some 446 tracks, they are brilliant. i recommend "two thousand four four six".
