Re: Oktava MK-319 mic review
Woud that be the "recent issue" with Scott Dorsey talking about the mods to be done on the MC 012 but also helpful for the 219/ 319s? This was mentioned in the thread about MK219 mods. How recent is that issue though, can I still get it from the shop or do I have to do the whole back issue catalouge ordering shingo dingo.

Alright thank you much. Anyone know which issue, other than "the recent one", of the magazine has the article we've been discussing? Namely the one about the MC 012 modifications.

Re: Oktava MK-319 mic review
yeah that's home brew DIY.
Sounds really open and clear. The HF boost discs have been removed and the capsule mounted in a round single layer wire mesh screen. Almost no internal reflections in the head around the capsule.
Internally, its got the full cap, resistor and FET upgrades that have been talked about around the 'net.

Re: Oktava MK-319 mic review
I have one from the Sound Room (mentioned earlier). To anyone talking about the sound quality of these mics, please specify where you got them. I would have to say that 319's from the Sound Room and 319's from GC are like apples and oranges. Taylor tests and matches them, and pawns the rejects off to the mega-retailers.
i have also found this mic to work great on many male vocalists, but not all. It particularly works well on soft, intimate Elliot Smith-style vocs.
Another application where I almost ALWAYS use it is bass cabinets. This mic totally rocks on bass cabs.
For a great deal on a cheap mic, buy a GC 319. For a more expensive, but by far more solid mic with a great smooth sound, pony up to the Sound Room. Taylor is a great guy. I'd love to try some of those THE mics.

That's not altogether accurate. I went to GC and tried out about 8 of them and found one real dud, and on or two that were sub-par. I chose two of the remaining 5 left and they sound fantastic. I do recordings that people are always asking me what I used and I have fun telling them... It's not apples and oranges at all, simlpy a clear choice: Just be smart with Guitar Center as they are untested/unsorted unlike the Sound Room. If you don't trust your own ears, then spend three times the price at Sound Room on somebodys ears you do trust.indierecordist wrote:For a great deal on a cheap mic, buy a GC 319.
