I've never read so much mis-guided crap in my life.

"layla" is one of the great guitar albums of all time
Carvin amps can sound great, I own one, but I agree Vai is overrated
The classic Allmans line up was incredibly good

"Easy" by kool and the Gang has a GREAT solo btw

Most overrated solo is by far "Eruption" nothing comes close!

The solos I don't like are the ones that go 'widdly widdly woooo weedly weedly waaaahhh.' The ones that are on lots of NWOBHM records (that's pronounced 'nwobhm,' btw). They make me feel like slapping a cushion...or...or gobbing at a sparrow. Or wearing a mask like this :-

And going down the off-license in it. Then asking for 10 Number 6 and a can of dandelion and burdock.

If I have to hear that f-ing solo at the end of Layla one more time, I'm going to hurt myself.

Jimmy Vaughan, now that guy can play. Too bad he can't sing or write lyrics.

IM a guitar player from the era of shred. I own lots of CD and records from Mike Varney's label as well at 90% percent of Steve Vai's collection.

Overrated is obviously a subjective opinion and nothing more than that.

I suspect those who hate green to come bash me now :) Green is overrated, its everywhere I look. Envy anyone?

SHREDDERS UNITE!

Dennis

you thought the axel/slash being compared to jagger/richards was bad, i heard someone compare axel/slash to plant/page.

that was THEE most ridiculous thing i had ever heard.

secondly, via and satriani --- very overrated. eric johnson, however, he's only been getting more tasteful and more skillfull since ah via musicom. i'd lump him in the same category as jeff beck. very versatile guitarist.

guitar players in general are kind of a drag :D

i never liked clapton, or santana for that matter. dave navarro....well i never thought he was innovative, but some of the solos on the first two janes records are pretty entertaining.

on the subject of guitar solos, i was reading roman's interview with bob ezrin the other day, and in talking about 'the wall' he mentioned that gilmour's solos on 'comfortably numb' and 'another brick in the wall' were both first takes. now, not to sound like an old hippie or anything, but those are some pretty amazing solos. i just imagine what it was like for the engineers sitting behind the board while a guy kicks that out on the first take......

Robert, it was the cheapest guitar in the shop (a Manhattan Jazzmaster copy, fact fans), and will not be sullied by pretentious geetar solos. Rather, it shall be sullied by nasty Steven Malkmus-esque clanking.

Guitar 'solos' forged from feedback with the aid of a screwdriver are the way forward!

I dunno, but I've often admired Edgar Meyer's solo bass work.

I find a lot of electric bass solos don't seem to have a point, just a lot of notes, but my musical tastes are more along the lines of classical and bluegrass - both use upright bass almost exclusively.

I think its funny that all of the flashy guitarists that are held so dearly by Guitar Magazine (or whatever) readers cant make a decent recod on their own. Every fancy-pants shredder whoe goes solo puts out the most soulless dry studio crap there is. Theyre kind of like thos long drive contest golfers, they can hit the hell out of the ball but they can play the full game (write a full song) for shit.

Or maybe they're like disignated hitters. Or a fluffer. Or Gallager.

I'll Take a 1 string Modern Lovers solo over Jimmy Page any day.

and dont get me started on drummers.
