Guitar Players: Most Overrated Solo
Guitar Players: Most Overrated Solo
For years and years I've read interviews with guitarists where they cite the solo in Maria Muldar's "Midnight at the Oasis" played by Amos Garrett as one of their favorite solos. I just listened to it again this afternoon after hearing Robbie MacInstosh cite it and....I think it sucks! There are all kinds of out of tune notes (and not good out of tune notes), it's not played with a lot of authority and the melodies aren't all that good. Fuck that solo!!

Re: Guitar Players: Most Overrated Solo
There are actually two main ones:
1. The many obnoxious minutes of solo on Lynard Skynard's "Freebird".
2. The intro to "Sweet Child Of Mine" by Guns & Roses.
Screw both of those adequately.

Re: Guitar Players: Most Overrated Solo
are we talking technically overrated? or that it falls flat feel-wise?
Dave, I never really thought of heartbreaker as a solo. More like a stupor. A drunken stupor.
But, the solo on Stairway to Heaven is overrated. Because if I can play it, it's overrated. But it's still the best moment of the song, and sounds cool, so it's good that way.

Re: Guitar Players: Most Overrated Solo
Just because you can play a cetain solo doesn't make it overrated, in my opinion.
Some of the greatest solos are extremely simple to play. "Something" is very easy to play but I have a hard time thinking of a more perfect solo.
Actually playing the "Something" solo correctly is hard. His phrasing and pre-bends are the shit.
Anyone ever try to play the solo to "Hotel California"? Don Felder and Joe Walsh are AMAZING! The bending in that solo is first rate!

First let me say that I don't like negative threads, negative posts, negative reviews or negative thinking. But sometimes the pleasure is just too great to resist.space_ryerson wrote:free bird or anything by tom morello.

Morello is way, way overrated. It makes me a little angry every time I hear his lame, overly effected playing. Thank you, space_ryerson, for adding his name to the overrated wall of shame.
(Yes, I registered to post this. I feel so small.)

Re: Guitar Players: Most Overrated Solo
Either of the guys from Pearl Jam.
I don't know that they can be called "overrated," though, 'cause I don't know that anyone rates them as good guitar players.
I did think the whole anti-guitar solo movement of the mid-'90s was kind of silly, though. Fine, release a song--or even a whole album--with no guitar solos. Don't bother me with your philosophy about guitar solos being silly or stupid or passe or any other such bullshit--I'll whomp you on the head with Django Reinhardt, Charlie Christian and Jeff Beck.

Re: Guitar Players: Most Overrated Solo
Steve Vai is a living, breathing overrated guitar solo. So is Yngwie and every shredder who has ever played. Except the guy who played on the Beastie's No Sleep til Brooklyn.

i'll agree about the RHCP comment there, but i couldn't disagree with you more about the jane's thing dave. but, it's not something i can argue with you about since it's all opinion.------------------------------------------------------------------------I think dave navarros name is under that other thread "worst second rate metal guitarists who got accepted by alternative nation".

however, i do think that the only good thing dave's ever done has been jane's addiction up to and including "ritual..." boy has he sucked since then though! and what the fuck's up with his bullshit MTV show anyway??!!
thanks,
todd
