Strangest Studio Techniques U Ever Used?

What is the most oddball mic situation, place, gear, etc. you have recorded in/with?? How great was it or how lame was it??

I just recorded my friend in my basement (washroom) it's a medium sized concrete hall. I stuck a mic inside the washing machine and the results came out great. It added nice reverb and also the strangest resonance with a long sustain. Neat.

recording in the forest with a portable gear has always been pretty interesting... and always great. i've stuck mics into weird containers and things i found in the kitchen and have gotten really cool affects, particulary with vocals and guitars. though, i can't recall any sort of "amazing" situation... yours does sound pretty cool.

Yea. If i stick my head in the washer and sing there is this ringing sustain that sounds like comb filters with reverberation..same thing goes for sounds in the room that creep in like in the case above..the clothhs container is about 4 foot deep and 3 foot wide, pretty thin metal, and is semi floating like its only attached by the spinning mech..

I miked up a ladder once, then we had four folks beat on it with drumsticks. very Tom Waits.

During the making of Fluorescein's "High Contrast Comedown" we ventured into 'Sound on Sound' territory with a Studer A-827 24-track. We carefully taped multiple layers of Kim Wipes over the erase head so that the head was no longer providing strong enough current to erase the tape prior to being recorded on. Then, the same piano part was played over and over on the same track. It created sort of a washed out double, triple, etc. Sort of a ghostly ambient sound. I'm not sure we achieved anything more than a good ol' echoplex would give you though. LOL. But boy, that kind of stuff sure entertains in the studio!!!

This was live, not in the studio, but still...I had to mic a toreador's foreskin. AKG C535 > Crest X8 > DBX 160A.

yo, you dont get too much foreskin sound with a 160A?

I would think an 1176 to be a better choice.

It was some cheapo radioshack cardiod in a bbq outside the room the band was actually playing in... I was young and it sounded like Poo:)
Another one that my friend tried that worked a little better was micing a baseboard heater attenuating the lows and boosting the highs. That was fun... ... yep.

Somehow, we acquired a large (about 20" diameter) hollow plastic sphere that was originally intended as a globe for some kinda light. Has a hole in the top for the bulb, perfect size for a mic. Set it on a carpet, shoved an omni in the hole, and had the percussionist play his parts right in front of it. Crazy reverb like sounds, I tell ya...
