Some good albums using Shure sm57's and 58's on vocals
I hear that there's alot of instances of a vocalist using an sm57 or 58 as their vocal microphone...Do you know of any albums that you know this to be true? I believe that De La Rocha of RATM used one on the first album...What are some other one's? I'm mostly curious to see whats been done w/ these mics...Major Lable albums/indie albums etc....Peace

I heard that also but I was wondering if it was BS also...Anyhow...I've tried the whole sm 57 on a vocal but I just cant seem to get what I want out of the mic on vocals...It's probably just me though...I have nice mic pre's but I cant get thick vocals out of these mics...

I saw a story on U2 a few years back while they were recording an album from that time, and they showed Bono overdubbing a vocal on a track. He was holding what looked to be an SM58. I think the 57's work great for certain vocals (fairly strong and even without many dynamic shifts) through a good preamp. (use that pop screen though).

I've used a SM57 for vocals when I was recording this hardcore band. I was using a large condenser on a stand, but he just couldn't get into. So I gave him a handheld SM57 and we go the track done first try with it. It sounds good to.

I did a little bit of work with U2...Flood producing. Bono used a Shure Beta 58 for those sessions.
The Sennheiser MD409 can be a cool vocal mic as well.
Don't forget about the Shure SM-7 either. More people use that on vocals than you'd think.

In the interview with Daniel Lanois in TapeOp #37 he says he always used some variant of Shure 58 mic on Bono's vocals. (Just happened to read it earlier today)

I believe Bono does indeed use an SM58 for recording his vox. I think Bjork also used an SM58 on Vespertine (which by the way is one of my all time fav records). I have also heard that Jagger has used an SM58 for some recordings as well.

Moze, tell us more. What did you work on with U2?
I've used a 58 a lot on vocals. To me it has more to do with the singer's comfort and how the vocals sit in the track. Sometimes a 58 will beat out the more expensive LDC, depending on the song. Use what works.

Vespertine rules.

Don't know if it's true, but I heard that John Lennon had a 57 that he always used for vocals. It had a crack in it that JL felt made it sound different (better) than other 57s.

ALmost all the Bjork stuff was tracked with a handheld 58 with her jumping up and down...

I read somewhere that Joe Strummer used an SM-58 on London Calling because his voice was too boomy. That album is in my top five albums of all time. The Clash are so good. They cannot recieve enough praise.
Werd.
