Anyone know the best source for acoustic drum samples? I'm looking for more vintage sounds for rock music. Like a small Ludwig kit without a bunch of fancy micing technique...

Wizoo drumsounds (platinum series) are very well recorded and fancy
(11/16 levels of kicks and snares). Sonic Implants are also very good.

They are really nice,
the one called "the drum DR. acoustic drums" I think.

It is really really good. real drums, no overblown room mics.
several kits, lots of snares and kicks.

In my opinion the best sounding and most usuable drum sample library is Mixtended from Big Fish Audio (I think it's Big Fish anyway.) It's premapped for NI Battery and Logic's ESX24. There are four or five mulit-sampled kits the are real heavy on the CPU because of the polyphony. But the seperate room, close-miked and overhead versions of each kit are very useful. The room and overhead samples are the one's you never get with most of these packages, and they make a ton of difference. The snares are a little weak if you're after that big rock sound, but supporting a combination of the Mixtended files with a solid kick and snare from an Alesis or a Boss (I've been using Reason for this) would yield a great result.

Absolutely go for the Ross Garfield Drums. They sound great, click on that Big Fish Audio link above! I'd advise against the Alesis machine--I often use a drum machine and I like the samples on the little Zoom machine--they sound very natural to me, for a drum machine, and it's half the price of the Alesis, which I used for a year or so.

Also, I run drum machines and samples through the Aphex 204 Exciter--I know, I know, but if drum samples is what you're stuck with, the 204 will really make them sound more lifelike and dynamic.

I know you've only mentioned owning Battery, but if you own Reason you should look into the new refill Propellerhead software has released. I don't own it (I couldn't do much with it if I did, as my computer's so old and slow), but the demos sound good to me.
