try playing with the attack and release times until the distortion you are getting becomes a little more tolerable. Distortion from your release is sorta inherent to the designs in a lot of compressors, you can for instance, use the release control on an 1176 to kinda dial in the distortion you want, use it to your benefit. So, getting into another compressor might not be the answer you are looking for. Turn the dials until the sound you dont like goes away, while still keeping the feel of the compression that you want, if you play for a bit you can get that RNC to sound right in that respect. Put in some time trying that out before you go buy something else, you might find you run into the same exact problem on a different box.

I got an RNP RNC on the way in the mail. If if distorts bass, is this also something I wouldn't want to use on guitar mic's or a kick drum???? Just asking before it arrives.

The RNC doesn't inherently just distort bass....back off that release time a bit.

Get a Distressor anyways though as they are SA-Weet....and then revel in the fact that it....uhhhhh, distorts your bass.

Part of the trick to getting the RNC to play nice is using it in SuperNice mode, I have found. Still no distressor, but usable for sure.

Yeah to the super nice mode on the RNC. I use the regular mode less and less. The one time I played with a dbx 163, I thought it sounded cool on a P and a Ric 4001. The dbx can still be had for pretty darn cheap too... (I know..shutup already...)
I thought this club was for musicians. Who let the drummer in here??

For bass a DBX 160A is a great deal used.
You'd be surprised how many big time engineers still use this over way pricier gear for bass guitar compression
