SONIC YOUTH - Worst band name for a good band, ever (although LZ is a close second). I resisted listening to SY for years just because of their band name. But then one day I accidentally heard "Schizophrenia" and my life has never been the same.

I always thought that name was freakin spectacular. It's just neat... I like the word Youth in there, and the way they're described as Sonic. I don't know, it just IS really cool.

I guess I like the sonic part; it totally fits the band. But the "youth" thing is silly - they were way out of their youths even when they first started the band. The '80s were filled with bands - usually hardcore- with the word "youth" in their name. Ugh. And I just hate those two words together - Sonic Youth - sounds silly to me.

But of course, now that I like the band ("like" is not the appropriate word here, is there some word that means both "like" and "base my entire life on their music"?), I like the band name. Same with Belle and Sebastian.

first place for shitty band name goes to VH1 "bands of the run" band SOULCRACKER. a strong second for FLICKERSTICK, also from bands on the "rum".

Then there's the grunge idiom, whereby your name must consist of two seemingly disparate nouns shoved together, i.e. Mudhoney, Soundgarden, Pearl Jam, Temple of the Dog, and the list goes on and on. And don't even get me started on people thinking it's edgy to put the word "dog" in their names along with other words that don't really relate. "Oohh...dog is GOD BACKWARDS, MAN! Fuck off.

What's worse is that I loved some of those grunge bands. Of course, Nirvana bucked the trend and that is a pretty great simple name for a pretty great simple band.

I forgot Candlebox, Silverchair, and Stone Temple Pilots, who are officially not grunge so much as grunge popularity coat-tailers in my book (though I dig STP).
