the brotherhood of 388...

Post by the velour fog » Fri Mar 12, 2004 8:48 am

not only am i the president...i'm a member.

I'm soooo excited because i can now join the ranks of The Holy Order of The Brothers of Tascam 388!!! :worthy:

While it makes its way to me I need to round up a manual, MRL tape, and some reels of tape. Where's the best place to find these? Is there anything else I need for when it first arrives? (for calibration/cleaning, etc.) I'm so excited! boo-ya!

I used to be just another dude with protoos on his 'puter - Suddenly I am the coolest AE in town and everyone wants me to record them.
I about to do my first "band" soon. I can't wait. Hillarious!

i made a record on a 388. that machine gives you a really fun sense of freedom...

it was great to not have to worry about patchbays or cords or mixing balanced with unbalanced... just plug in and GO.

not everything sounded great... but nothing sounded terrible...

I love my old 388 recordings. they have so much character.
I wish i had still had one.

I recorded the first primus record on one.
Yeah sure that record sounded like shit.
I didn't own anything but a 421, two 57's and a microlimiter.
that machine had the coolest low end though.

My band did two really good records on a 388.

That is the only Primus album I like the sound of!

WoW Slider-

I had read online that Primus used one of those to record that album. ( at Berkley square right???)

thats my favorite album by them.

I also read in an interview w/ Les that they used one for the more recent Brown album.
I have some really horrible gear!!!

They're 1/4" 8 track, and all my friend does is clean the heads. There was an intermittent track that had a relay out or something, but he's had no other problems in the 5 or so years he's had it. They really sound good! Dead simple to use.

1/4"

i thought i was pushing the track width issue at 1/2"

will have to think about it!

hey club members,
i was hoping you might be able to give me a little
insight on a problem i am recently having with my Tascam 388.

after recording and roughly mixing a
song i was working on the previous night, i started up
the machine and it refused to play. the tape is set
properly on the deck, the fuses are all in great shape
and the machine will fast forward and rewind
perfectly, but it will not play. actually, that is the
only thing that it is not doing. when i press the play
button, the tension arms move and of the proper
mechanisms engage, but that's it. i have tried to spin
the reel manually, but it's not budging.
what do you think is happening here?

thanks for reading my question, i look forward to
hearing your expert opinions on this puzzling (for
me!) predicament.

Can Fostex R8 people get honorary membership? Or are we dreaming?

No - let me guess. We're dreaming.

Bobby. Iam an ex-r8 user. we'll start our own club.!!! actually it doesn't work anymore. it sounded good at the time and I made some cool recordings with it. I just am a bit heavy handed with equipment and it broke.

Yeah - they're not exactly bomb-proof, I'll give you that. :D

The more I use it the more I think it's better suited to clean-ish, gentle stuff. I dunno - just a thought. And also my 'gentle' could well be someone else's 'bloody noisey'.
