Patchbay - which one(s) ??

Post by swingdoc » Thu Mar 18, 2004 11:11 am

Whats a good patchbay recommendation for a model / brand, would be used as front end to in/out HDR. HDR has 25-pin to TRS cables. Would prefer TRS in / outs on the patchbays. I suppose I could go to solder connections, but TRS would be first option.

Thanks,

I am very happy with my Furman. My advice would be stay away from Behringer. They tend to have signal bleed and wow, that's a bummer.

All those "music store" patchbays with TRS on the rear are junk, in my opinion. I'd rather go with a real patchbay like ADC, even if it means buying a used one.

I've had good luck with this guy:

Hey Dave,
I've heard you say that before about the cheap patchbays.
Do they really introduce carp into the signal chain?
Is it poor connections, resistance?
What is it about these that makes them add suck?

Yeah, and they give your music that "fishy" smell. You know the one.

Sorry, couldn't resist.

The Furmans add...ummmm... bass,
The Behringers, smelt,
Neutrik, cod.

A tube patchbay however adds a certain flavor of salmon or swordfish.

Dyslexics untie!

I won't even speculate on any tweaky voodoo or claim that those cheap patchbays "sound" bad or whatever. I come from a broadcast background, where reliability is absolutely paramount. The patchbays are at the heart of the signal flow through a facility... cheap plastic connectors with iffy switching contacts are nothing I'd want to pass important signals through. I know from my time in guitar amp repair that those jacks are not to be trusted. Replacing bad plastic "Cliff" jacks on Marshalls was daily bread-and-butter at our shop!
