PreAmps under $1000

Post by GreenLawns » Sat Jun 14, 2003 9:00 am

I'm looking for a dual channel pre preferably under $1,000. The main application will be vocals, though all other sorts of instruments / sounds will be used as well. I would really like to have a variation between colored and crystal clear. I'm not sure how I can describe what I am looking for without using much overused words like "warm" and "full." I've been looking at the FMR RNP and the Sebatron 2 channel with VU model. Any thoughts on these or other recomendations?

You could probably find a used Dan Alexander 1272 pre for that much. They're not bad.

I have been digging the Sytek mic pre's (in this price range).

If you get them with the burr brown Op amps on every channel, they are nice clean (ish) fast mic pre's and you can get 4 channels in a 1 space rack for around $900 dollars for sure. Probably less.

They remind me of the pre's in an MCI or Neotek, which makes sense given the designer...

I have two channels stock and two with the burr brown opamps in my Sytek. A great unit (four total channels for well under 1,000). If you are currently looking to move up from mackie type mic preamps give it a try.
