What do you use you Oktava MK219 for?

Post by drummerdan » Sat Mar 20, 2004 9:47 am

Some friends of mine recorded my bands new demo, and they had a pair of these. We used them as high overheads behind the drums to pickup a stereo image of the cymbals and toms. I was very pleased with the results, and the price is right! So i'm gonna buy one to play around with. What do YOU guys and gals like it on?

Here's a link.

I don't really like the 219 on OH. I did like them on toms and bottom snare. And they work pretty good on guitar amps when I also use a 57.

They make great room mics for drums.

Doorstop. Just kidding, it's too light. Actually I've never used one and better shut up now.

Drum overhead - nice alternative to the Marshall 603. More of a "room" sound.

Acoustic guitar - everyone complains it's too dark/muddy. I always liked it. If I was just going to have an acoustic track blended in in the backround, I might go 603, but I like the 219 for something more upfront.

the 219 has this ability to capture 'thud' (not thump though) but not 'strum strum'. it's pretty good on 'plink' too. you think i'm joking, but i'm not. i don't know how to explain it, but this mic does one thing well. the rest it's just sorta (makes so-so face).

I use it to pick up the body sound of an acoustic. also sounds good on mallet keys. all thud-n-plunk territory.

I've gotten pretty good sounds using a 219 as a room mic on a keyboard part that involved playing a Casio through a guitar amp. It rolled off high-end harshness just fine. I've tried and tried to get a good distorted guitar sound with a 219 but it always comes out too thin for my tastes. It also seems to really bring out my room's boxiness like no other mic - yuk. But if I had to record a thin, boxy guitar part the 219 would be my man. Vocals weren't so hot but neither was the singer (that's me). I'd like to find more uses for this thing besides looking cool, maybe I'll try it on drums like Mr. 1272 said.

Can someone try it out on a kick / bass drum? The best bass drum sound I've gotten out of an SM57 is exactly 3in away from the resonant head sound hole, parallel to the ground. Perpaps someone here could try the same (& any additional positions) with the Oktava MK219 to help my purchasing decision? :)

no kidding here! I've got a pair. 1 is talkback, and the other is doorstop.

they're also useful sometimes if I'm looking for a weird sound.
