music videos where they actually play the instruments...
There aren't too many, are there? Everyone likes to do it Top-of-the-Pops style.
The ones I know of:
Beastie Boys, "3 MC's and 1 DJ"
Radiohead, "Idiotique"
Strokes, "Last Nite"

The video for the Jet song you here everywhere has them playing, plugged in even. Otherwise you need to check VH1 classic.
no war for heavy metal!

REM did a video for "South Central Rain (I'm Sorry)" in 1985 wherein Stipe sang the vocal live to the studio track (through a U47, I think!)...the rest of the guys were hidden behind opaque screens that were backlit. If memory serves, Stipe had an aversion to lip-synching at the time. Man, they were great until "Document" came along and ruined everything...

I heard somewhere that Stipe has never lip synched for videos. I can't belive I know that, I'm so ashamed.

How about the videos for "Who Are You" by the Who and "Tom Sawyer" by Rush where they were filmed at the studio mainly at the time of tracking? Definitely this kind of thing is VH1 Classic territory though.

The video for Sloan's "Friendship" was performed live. It was in tribute to some kind of Led Zeppelin video or something.

On Jet....
How do you figure?!?!
On VH-1 Classic...
YEP! There is some great stuff on there if you happen to tune in during certain times. Certain bands I don't even like...I'll watch the great live videos! Rock!

The "Limelight" video is the same concept. Interesting for the music geeks to watch, but not so exciting for the lay-person. Of course, who is Rush for if not the music geeks?Cellotron wrote:How about the videos for..."Tom Sawyer" by Rush where they were filmed at the studio mainly at the time of tracking?

Springsteen has done live vocals over studio tracks for "Streets Of Philadelphia" and "Lonesome Day". Both have him out on the streets walking around singing while you can hear all the city noises (sirens, cars, etc.) in the background.

New Order-The Perfect Kiss
Although not the most exciting music video, they really were turning knobs on their sequencers and playing their keyboards.

that video is tasty in its sheer raw power. SOOO damn simple. a band led by a man in a pure white room with gear and cables running EVERYWHERE.space_ryerson wrote:Nine Inch Nails - March of The Pigs

Re: music videos where they actually play the instruments...
damn fools, what kind of stink-up is this? Videos are mimed, even when the fools are "playin", you still hear the back track, which they most likely didn't play live anyway. trick thread, bad taste, I'll get you rotten fools for this. You made T look silly. Somebody bring me Luther, he'll sort it out. Cat's on fire, gotta run. bye!

Damn, T, I'm disillusioned. I thought for sure your "Treat Your Mother Right" video was done live. The backup singers have mics and everything.misterT wrote:damn fools, what kind of stink-up is this?
