Re: John Bonham...

Re: John Bonham...
yeah, that's why they say led zep consisted of *three* highly talented musicians.matttherat wrote:For sure! Not only did he play so many different parts as well as arrange, but he was a complete badass on the bass - following jimmy page note-wise while staying with bonham. holy goddamn crap.
btw, robert plant was the weak link in that band. not on the same level at all.

Unfortunately, I'm old enough to have experienced Three Dog Night first hand, but not so old to have forgotten it all.

There's nothing unfortunate about that.rhythm ranch wrote:Unfortunately, I'm old enough to have experienced Three Dog Night first hand, but not so old to have forgotten it all.

Dude, I'm totally with you on this one!!! Obviously, John, Paul and George were insanely good songwriters, but even their mediocre shit I get into, and it's usually because of how awesome the drums are. I hear people all the time saying Ringo wasn't much of a drummer, and that kills me! You know it's him within 10 seconds of the start of a song. He's all dat ... dat ... doo daka ... dum dum.[/quote]musikman316 wrote:Ringo made...

I'm so sick of defending Ringo against people who don't know better.

Re: John Bonham...
i remember listening to 'the lemon song' and thinking his time was pretty all over the place (relatively speaking) during the breakdown section.cgarges wrote:I recently got to hear some really great Zepp studio outtakes. In the middle of one of those deep, huge 12/8 blues tunes, Bonham went for something and completely lost it. Man, did I feel good after that.
What a badass.

and that made me happy.
was anyone else amazed by the sound quality of the dvds? i only saw the show from '71 but i couldn't believe how good everything sounded....
Re: John Bonham...
In defense of Robert Plant:
He was a hugely influential as a vocalist (too bad he didn't really influence anybody GOOD...) And he continued to improve post-Zeppelin.
He has proven the most tasteful musician post-Zeppelin. Though JPJ and JP have done some cool stuff too.
He is still a rabid music fan.
As to Bonzo, we know he can pummel--but we often forget how graceful and witty his drumming was.

Re: John Bonham...
The drum fills in the White Album's 'Long, Long, Long...' are fuel to so many brilliant drum introductions. And Ringo often did more with just half a kit than many did with a whole kit (ahem...here's where I get kicked in the balls...) like that loser from Rush.
Bonham has to be the best skilled popular drummer till Stewart Copeland. Execellent and inventive hit-hat work (check out 'In My Time of Dying"), anthemic bass drum work (WTF 'When the Levee Breaks'),and even decent background percussive work.
Zeppelin was perfect. Page was a hack guitarist who could create amazing sounds. Plant was a soulful wide-ranged childish singer. John Paul Jones was a great arranger and bass player.
Sometimes cool shit only really happens the first time once.

Re: John Bonham...
I agree. The guy lived like he drummed -- aggressive, over the top. Legend was bonham and zep's manager used to have to get in fights to get paid. When they came out to the bay area, one of Bill Graham's whining asshole partners tried to rip them off, and bonham almost killed him (I hear that's why they never played the west coast again; I don't if it's true).
