great home recording table

Post by kalil » Tue Jun 17, 2003 1:32 pm

i've been searching for a compact, yet versatile recording desk for a couple months now. I live in manhattan and space isn't really a luxury. A friend turned me on to the Jerker table at IKEA. I swear it is the greatest thing. It is metal and wood with an adjustable shelf for computer monitors that go over the MIDI controller and swivel shelves on the side for monitors. I just wanted to pass on the info because most "recording stations" are way too expensive. The Jerker is only $129 (that's how much at the store) so if someone's looking, check them out. http://www.ikea-usa.com/product_present ... id=426,433

thanks for listening.....

Does it come with a Kleenex holder?

as a matter of fact, an optional fluid catcher attaches to the underside of the table....that's why it's so great

put some wheels on that jerker!

then you can jerk it around the studio with you too, a mobile jerk. provides extra warmth and thickness when recording swedish rock bands. put some skateboard trucks and wheels on it.

this store has everything... if the jerker doesn't give you enough privacy, they even have a desk with a shower curtain

Ikea does mack out with sturdy, inexpensive studio furniture.

I was back in Virginia to visit relatives, went into the Ikea I used to live next to, and found a computer desk/workstation that I liked so much, I bought it and checked it on the plane.

metal desk, casters, sidecar for the cpu, slanted back of the table so your monitor sits down and looks up at you, and sliding shelf for your mouse - $30.

perfectly sized for the computer station in my studio. can't beat it.

and they have some really nice speaker stands from time to time, all on the cheap cheap.

don't forget the bag 'o tealights ($4.95 / 100) and tealight holders ($.50 ea) for "atmosphere"....

I need to find a cheap table that will hold my 16 channel Soundcraft board, my 19" monitor, and that has a keyboard drawer underneath...

My friend who told me about the table also bought some metal filing cabinet for all his rack gear for cheap as well...I didn't get it online, I went to the store and it came up only $129....

What kind of weight can it bear? I'll have to get out the tape measure to see if it'll fit my board.

I've had pretty bad luck with Ikea furniture. Most of the stuff I got from there has had some sort of structural problem or another after a few months. Maybe it's just my shoddy construction skills. I wouldn't use this thing if that wood top is press-board, or whatever that stuff is called, which Ikea uses in a lot of their stuff...

Or if you want to go balls out and really build yourself a custom desk...

Build a model:

And the desk:

That's how it's done. Feel free to swap out the board.
