A Ghost Is Born

Post by skinnyemo77 » Tue Apr 06, 2004 1:48 pm

Any body else wierded out by the style progression of their latest record?

Very strange! The guitar playing I think is very Fugazi/Sonic Youth Like in places.

If you haven't heard it, it is available for quicktime stream:

Sounds like a pretty logical progression to me. I like it. Some of the guitar is raunchy and off the deep end, some is tasteful. Do they have a new guitar player now or is it just Jeff?

I'm about halfway through it right now, and I think it's pretty incredible how much they've matured in the span of 2 records. The range from Summerteeth to YHF to this in pretty damn amazing. Outside of Radiohead, I can't think of any band as important. I've learned so much from this band's abilities in the studio.

3 cheers for Tweedy.

I can't do streaming, so I can't listen to check, but someone told me Nels Cline's greasy guitar fingers are all over the album. That sounds like a cool mixture if it worked.

Is it just me or does Tweedy's voice sound really different on this record than previous records? Maybe it's my laptop and crappy headphones but the timbre of his voice sounds a lot more nasal and scooped.

I just listened to the whole record. I like it. "Hell is Chrome" and "Muzzle of Bees" are amazing. There's a little too much Jim O'Rourke debauchery for me but overall it's a cool record. Definitely an extension of YHF.

I can't wait for the movie.

he definitely sounds different. Like he took singing lessons or something. I think that's John on Hell is Chrome, though.

The vocals on "Theologians" threw me off. It didn't sound like him. No cigarette creak to his voice. But I recognized him on the other tracks.

I don't think it sounds out of character, I'd agree that it feels like a pretty logical move. It reminds me a bit of Randy Newman, at least to the extent that I know Randy Newman...the extended use of piano also helps that out, but of course there's lot more going on than just that which separates it from Newman. Less experimental than YHF, but that's fine and good. Don't want to try remake the same record.

"I'm A Wheel" and "Hummingbird" are pretty far out tracks. :-)

I was going to remark that Tweedy's voice is pretty different. He goes for some interestingly high melody lines. More falsetto than I'm used to from Tweedy.

I wouldn't be suprised if 'Hell is Chrome' is sung by John seeing as he usualy does the falsetto harmonies. Im really starting to like this album. The new mix for handshake drugs is great, I hadnt even really noticed the bassline in the original recording but it is totaly awesome. Im not sure that Nels Cline is on the album but he is certainly going to be on the tour and that looks like it will be sweet.

Unfortunately, I just read today that Jeff has just gone into rehab for an addiction to painkillers that he was taking for cronic migranes. Supposedly it's the reason they pushed the album back. I really hope he can get over it ok and find different ways to deal with his migranes in the future. :(
