Should I Get Pro Tools or Vegas?

i heard with pro tools its strick with the type of equipment you use and with vegas you can use anything. your suggestions would be great. thanks.

if you want to be able to work with other people's studios in thier native format (assuming that they use Pro Tools) or impress someone who's heard of it, get Pro Tools.

if you want something that's flexible, easy to use, runs on vanilla hardware and is much cheaper, get Vegas.

the ultimate caveat - get what works for you, and what feels comfortable. I'm very comfortable in Vegas. I tried Pro Tools and did not enjoy the experience - it just wasn't the right app for me.

But you can download the free version of PT and the demo of Vegas, and try them both out. You can also find copies of n-Track, Sonar, Cubase, Logic, Nuendo, Samplitude and Traktion and go nuts figuring out which one you like best.

One of them will feel better and easier to work with than the others - go with that one.

I think all of the DAWs can be great and you should certainly use what you are comfortable with. However, I switched from Cubase to Pro Tools a while back and am extremely happy. The best part is the stability. I sold my niftier Motu 896 and got the more plain (in my opinion) Digi 002 rack. The good side of the PT/hardware limitation is that your software and hardware are integrated and made by the same company.

Having worked with Pro Tools for years, I would recommend that you take your money - and go to Vegas. There's hookers there are awesome, but expensive. You're money would be better spent having lots of fun for week or so in Vegas.

I'd go with Pro tools. More people will be able to give you tips using the platform. If you are planning on doing projects coming from other studios or sending projects out to other studios, you really should get pro tools. Most of the people I know that were using Vegas upgraded to something else.

I must not be working in the same circles with people from Deigo that you have Rafter. Every project I've sent there and got back was in pro tools format.

If you are going to be working on video at all, you should definitely choose Vegas. It really is a great program for both audio and video, and there is good online forum support for it as well.

Vegas is awesome. It is very easy to learn. I have been using it for a year. It is great for video editing so if you ever plan to do video, get it.

Isn't Vegas 5.0 coming out soon, i think they are introducing it this weekend or something?

If sound quality is a consideration, avoid Pro Tools at all costs. There are several DAW applications on the PC side that absolutely blow PT (and frankly, any mac audio program except Sonic Solutions) away. If you want a setup that caters to the lowest common denominator of artist intelligenge on recording equipment, get a cheap PT rig. And then save up for that Neve 1073 recording channel, as a better sounding and more flexible preamp obviously has never been made. Then you be stylin!

A really phenomenal sounding PC program you should also check out is Samplitude.
