The Coolest Studio You've Ever Worked In

Post by cgarges » Tue Apr 13, 2004 5:06 pm

I know I asked a similar question last year, but I'm curious about new perspective.
What's the coolest studio you've ever worked in and what made it that way?

Studio G Brooklyn, which is why I chose to move all my gear in a become a partner.Tony (my partner and pal) is one of the coolest people to work with on earth, and we have a sickening collection of gear for a couple of died in the wool touring musicians turned audio engineer/producers. That place is liek the funnest clubhouse ever, with too many fun weird things to play with, and enjoy, and make great music with which is the point!!! I feel like anything is possible in that place. I almost never have to say no there. Like "can we...(you name it)" and I can say "yes" a lot. that is more important to me these days than having a gymnasium to track drums in, ya know?

(i wish we had a giant lounge with a pinball machine and a pool table though)

Westend recording in Kansas City, Ks is second, and it is because the owner is so great, and I learned a lot from that guy.

I have worked in studios big and small, and I have realized that I prefer medium.

Westend is a well laid out, smart studio with first class gear and a really cool vibe to it. Mike miller, the owner is a first class guy that makes his own gear old school style. Awesome, and I respect him a lot.

I dont need a 3 million input console to make a great record, so I enjoy making great records in unique places with their own "something" about them. It gives each record a fingerprint that is unmistakable, like the classic recordings people reference from the "glory days" rather than that same old SSL in a "perfect" environment type of vibe.

Ingenuity makes rock records great IMO.

Well... my own, here in God's country outside of Albany, New York.

The best thing about it is the floor to ceiling windows. You can lose yourself, staring out at the mountains and the sky. And when you climb up to the deck, on the roof, you've stepped out into the sky, with these vast vistas.

I know that's not the only reason people climb out there, but hey, peaceful and beautiful and wildness and nature, nothing wrong with that.

My favorite so far has been Craig Schumacher's Wavelab in Tucson. My band used to record and rehearse there when they used to be in the old warehouse by the RR tracks. Really cool vibe and Craig knows what he's doing. Calexico and Neko Case have both worked there as well.

I spent 5 weeks at Ardent with Jim Dickinson. For historic reasons alone, it's a great place to work-- but it also has a great vibe (and a great mellotron).

I would have to say Studio Litho is a great place. Great people, great vibe, and a really great custom API.

Studio X is a great place too. Big room and great people.

Avast! is an awesome place. More outboard gear than you can shake a stick at. So much gear that you can't plug all of it in at once. It's ridiculous.

I like my place too.

All these studios are in Seattle.

tarbox road studios.. working w dave fridmann is great. my favorite things about the place are: one, it's residential so you can really go into submersion mode, and two, dave leaves at midnight but leaves everything on and encourages everyone to keep on workin. awesome! some amazing stuff to mess with too.

Allaire Studios is certainly the coolest I've ever worked in- Amazing gear, great sounding rooms, stunning views, great food and a very cool group of people that totally know their shit. What more could you ask for?

my friend's place that i mix at, which houses the huge modular synth that was on the cover a few weeks ago is a super amazing place. it's in his apt, and he's got a fairlight fame II, tons of outboard, tons adn tons of synths... it's a fun room to work in.. lots of creative possibilities.

coolest tho, hmmm... my favourite place to work right now is my house, because i'm comfortable and know the sound of my room and my monitors and stuff, even though it's not a 'proper' studio.

Gigantic in tribeca is cool. nice neve and outboard toys.
