Hi all,
Our drummer wants to be able to add a spring reverb sound to his snare drum live (and use a foot-swith to turn it on and off on each hit - (sorta a dub/king tubby kinda thing) He is basically able to "dub himself out" while he's playing.
The problem I am having is I am not able to get his sound "wet" enough without creating massive feedback in his monitors on stage. We are using a SM57 aimed at the side of the snare. I want it so that when he hits the snare with the spring reverb, it is loud and very effected...
Would a contact mic work better? A Behiringer feedback destoyer? Is there anyway to mostly isolate the snare to add massive effects to it?

does he have to have the snare in the monitors? I mean, he's pounding on it right there in front of his face!

small club?
try the mic at the top of the drum, you can maybe use less preamp gain that way and save some fb probs.
send efx only to the monitor, no direct.
for what its worth, i always control drum efx from foh.
i use a beat on 57 and cheap digiverb. the clubs pa is no dream
system either.
i bet you shld be able to make it work with a 57 and no bear-ringer destroyers. good luck

I'll try that - putting the FX only in his monitor sounds like a good idea.
Regarding the triggered sample - he already has two digital pads... I could make one a snare sound with spring reverb - but the real snare has such a better sound...
I would love to have a dedicated sound mixer to dub the band out... but adding another person just makes it even more complicated..

I always just sent the delay and the verb pedals to an amp.
Mic the snare with whatever, put it through the pedals, or FX you want, then to a small, crappy keayboard or guitar amp. mic the amp for the mains and the monitors.
The delay can be cheap as hell but going through an amp it sounds much more classic. same with verb.
