Drum Skins Made Of Baby Cows

Post by Girl Toes » Wed Apr 21, 2004 10:11 am

I was wondering if any one knows anything about calf skin drum heads. Besides the fact that Remo skins are called weather king because calf skins hated the weather. I was reading the interview in the new tape op with Cosimo Matassa. He said it is what he missed most from the old days. I don't think I have ever heard them before. Does ANY body still make them at all??? I dunno.

Have a good afternoon,
word to the mutha.

i made a threead aobut this a couple months ago. People didnt really like them becuase if it got humid and stuff you would have to dry out the heads or something like that. I am not really sure. Chris Garges suggested the remo fiberskyns or something like that. Just do a search for it or somthing.

If you are vegan, can you play calf skin heads?

Elvis!!!!

I'd still be interested in them, just to try. AT least in the winter. Would they be less of a bitch in the winter, i asume??? But forget em in the summer??

I dunno. If I'm hunting all over for a rare record, people say just get the CD. I will haul around my space echo and people wonder why I don'y just get some line 6 pedal. Or just get one of them fancy new digitalk keyboards insted of lugging around an 80 pund farfisa. I'll go through enough trouble to get the sounds I like, thats the bottom line. I want to hear what they sound like and play with them before i decide they aren't worth the trouble.

http://www.rebeats.com/ is probably your best bet for calfskin heads.

I just took a look around and he doesn't specifically list 'slunk' heads.....
for those of you already squeamish about using calfskin heads...slunk heads were the skin of an unborn calf for use on the snare side of a snare drum.

I used to work, years and years ago, for the guy behind Rebeats and he's
a great guy and is one of the worlds experts in vintage drums.

The Remo versions are synthetic "skin", right?

Yeah, the Remo's are just plastics or what ever. I'd be interested in doing a side by side test of calf skins vs the remo's, actually. Hmmmm.... I'll check out rebeats soon. Any others?

i would just like to politely suggest that it really cannot be necessary to use an animal's skin to get good drum sounds. try evans if you dont like remo, but leave poor Bessie out of this!

I suppose you could carry a heat gun ($25 at the hardware store) in your kit during the summer - heating them up will dry them out. Sort of like tribal drummers way back used to hold their drum(s) over a fire to get them up to talking pitch. Kind of like waiting for your modem to connect for folks a few hundred years ago, I guess.

I've used these Earthtone heads with much success...they sound great on a 22" 60's Gretsch kick. Super wide open BOOM. Here's the site.

http://www.earthtoneheads.com/

BTW- Do you know to tell a good calfskin head? There should be a dark line (4 to 6 inches thick) running down the center of the skin. (Want to know why? This is the disturbing part....) That where the spine was, and for whatever reason these are the strongest patches of calf.

Yikes.
