Hi everyone,
I'm going to be treating the ceiling in my basement, and I was going to go the rigid fiberglass route. When I was at Home Depot last, I did a quick run down the insulation aisle, and I didn't notice any rigid fiberglass, but I did see this several inch thick pink styrofoam looking stuff. It had the number R-19 on it, which as I recall was a number that had been mentioned as good in previous insulation discussions. Anyone know if the pink stuff will work the same?

Will this stuff be exposed? If so, it's probably not a good idea since it's extremely flammable.

Aha. I was going to affix it to the rafters or whatever they're called. If it's flammable, forget it. I'll have to try my luck with getting a store employee to help me find the fiberglass stuff.

You can't get it at Home Despot, but we just put in a drop ceiling using Owens Corning 705. It's basically the same stuff as 703, except that it's more compressed and subsequently more rigid.
Not sure where you are, but you can usually get it at a commercial supply place. Ours had to special order it for us...
Also, it won't go up like a match...

To get 703 or 705, look in the Yellow Pages under "Insulation". You'll need to find a commercial/contractor reseller, not a home improvement store.

Don,

Don't waste your time. That stuff may be useful for thermal insulation, but it's worthless for acoustics. Rigid fiberglass is what you want.

Re: pink styrofoam insulation
thanks everyone. I did a search on Owens Corning.com and there's a place nearby that carries rigid fiberglass. I'm glad I didn't waste my time/money on the pink stuff.
