This is my kit (60's Gretsch Champagne Sparkle 20" 14" 12" + snare). I absolutely love it, although I usually go with my metal Rogers Dynatone snare.

I bought a 70's Ludwig Vistalite kit last month. I don't like it as much as I thought I would. It sounds a little bit fake. Lots of attack and not much else. The kick records really well however.

Hey Vistalite guys - what heads do you prefer? My kit showed up with Powerdots which I promptly replaced with coated Emporers. I'm still not happy. I was thinking of switching to clear Aquarians.

On vistalites I've heard and semi-recorded (only an intern at the time), the best sounding heads were Clear Remo Pinstripes with Aquarian Kicks. I have a personal vendetta against coated tom heads as that they have a tendency to change tonal characteristics every few days or so. But clear aquarians do kick ass for toms, but for snares always coated remo pinstripes.

not to be overly stupid but I'm fond of which ever one has a good drummer behind it.

those gretsch sets are lovely. I have a little singerland and I dont know a damn thing about it. its old. sounds nice. I'm happy with it.

Noble and Cooley makes great stuff, a friend of mine ordered a set a few years back and it sounded incredible. Their snare drums rock!

Their EVERYTHING rocks! Their toy drums rock. The factory rocks. Their history rocks.

If you EVER find yourself in Western Mass. and have a little bit of time to go see the factory, do it. It's like the fucking Wonka factory. Except that Jay's taller than Willy Wonka.

Hey Ruby - Have you ever compared your Gretsch set with the Ludwig Fab 4 set? I would expect the Gretsch to sound better, but I'm wondering if it's by inches or by miles.

For whatever it's worth, I find the older Gretsch drums to be cleaner, fuller, and a little slicker-sounding than the older Ludwig kits. They sound a little better in a wide tuning range and project fundamentals better than the Ludwigs. (To me, that means they generally sound better at FOH.) The older Ludwig kits just scream rock and roll, though. I didn't really believe it 'til I played a few of them. I'd probably be much happier close-miking old Grestch drums and they tend to integrate with modern drum kits better, but for a more ambient rock thing, the Ludwigs may be the way to go. Hope that helps some.
