Holy Crap: NY2A

Post by joel hamilton » Tue Jun 08, 2004 8:09 pm

Trying out an Electro Harmonics NY2A compressor right now.

HOLY CRAP. This is the best new tube compressor on the market. Period.

I cant believe how bad ass this thing is. Switching between Detectors is absolutely genius. Same settings, different detector circuit= different compressor without repatching. Same completely amazingly bad ass tube path.

We will never need heat in the studio again. Bring on winter!

I was just running this thing across some program material. A dub band called "dub trio" I just recorded for ROIR records. This is the 88.2 capture of the two track tape mixes. HOLY CRAP. WOW. I cannot believe how bad ass this thing is.

When they come out, this thing may become my desert island compressor in a hurry.

I could see using this for everything, because it has a setting for everything, without being gimmicky. Want an LA2a/gates sta-level-Ba6a/UA176/Decca/motown/Altec/EMI/anything comp?

This does it. Really well. All of that. I have owned or used a bunch of tube compressors. This one is by far the best I have ever owned, and very close to the best I have ever used. I have used fairchilds, and collins limiters, GATES limiters, RCA comp/limiters... all the great, classic compressors.

This compressor could easily sit in the rack with an LA2a, BA6A, a collins limiter, and a fairchild without being embarrased. Easily.

This thing will be a steal because it will list for less than an LA2a and it is two channels.

Amazing compressor. Wow is it refreshing to use a piece of gear that was designed to be completely amazing, rather than "affordable" or "vintage sounding."

In My opinion, it achieves both by being amazing, doing an amazing job of compressing with tubes (EIGHT of them!), and being cheaper than anything even remotely near this kind of quality and "usefulness."

Congrats to EH for making a classic.

Only a few exist right now. I am not sure of (yes, electro HarmoniX) the company's official stance on this thing.

well. they apparently have no official stance, since its not on their website.
but then i must ask. how did you get one? did they loan/send you one?
are they just sorta sending out test units to see what people think?

And here I was all excited to check out the Groove Tubes Glory Comp that looks like a nice compliment to the two ViPres in the studio.
Damn, and you're just beta-testing now with now sure sign of when they'll be around?

The documentation is amazing that comes with the unit.
Fully cool "theory of operation" section that gives actual reponse times of each light source, along with the science behind each light sources behaviour.

I am 100% impressed with the whole package. I really think these will go down in history as one of the greats of all time. I really believe that.

If you can get your hands on one, by all means do it.

I would rather have this in the rack than almost any of the "classics" that are being sold at breathtaking prices these days.

Too bad is doesn't have a snappy name like, say, the "Smashup." Pity, I would almost consider it otherwise.

Yeah, I saw this at AES I think. I'm glad you're digging this much. They also have some full rackspace synth filters on the way that should be equally cool.
