any info on DIY mic preamps would be appreciated...
i've been scouring the internet for schematics for microphone preamplifiers and really haven't come up with much. i'd like to find something fun to build, either transistor/ic or tube based. does anyone have any information regarding the sale of kits or some free schematics somewhere? i'm not too thrilled with paia gear, as their schematics are rather hard to read but if anyone has info besides paia i'd love to hear it.

Havent tried them myself but I want to....some guys around here seem to think quite highly of them. I imagine they will chime in.

If you know the sound of a 1272 and you build the N72 kit correctly, it would be pretty difficult I think, for anyone to be dissatisfied with the end result. Its that good.
I use the rolls boards in just about everythign I rack up. Be careful before you go DIY something like an API 312 or a Langevin AM16, you can get the original parts for cheap, it makes no cost effective sense to build one yourself, just get a vintage piece and rack it yourself.

Take a look at Tape Op #30. There's an article on building a two channel tube preamp by Scott Hampton.

Yeah, and if you visit www.hamptone.com, you'll see a killer amount of support for building that pre, including templates for making your own mu-metal transformer shields, and lots of photos of good and bad layout.
Also, as it notes on that site, Scott is working up another pre design for Tape Op, this one to be discrete solid-state. A bit less daunting for some of us than tubes.

call john hardy, and get his info packet, it has all the shematics for the
jensen 990 opamp (very close to the api stuff)- too build a great trans-
former coupled(class-a) mic pre for around $200 a channel.

Pat Morford sells a high end 2ch preamp kit for $500 that seems attractive. It uses nifty Millenia gain modules and custom input transformers, and I can't say I haven't been tempted to put one together. It's a bare bones kit, so you add a power supply, switches, and a case.
