Getting rid of my Mackie D8B, suggestions for analog mixer

Post by Dyno » Sat Jul 10, 2004 9:52 pm

I'm running the Mackie HDR24/96 with the D8B mixer and I'm really fried on the board. My ears tell me my mixes sound narrow, lack depth, smoothness and it's just plain hard to get all the tracks to glue together.
This seems to be indicitive of the D8B.

I do want to keep using the HDR; I need the editing capabilities. but I want to go back to an ANALOG 32 ch mixer. I don't even know where to start other than I have about 6K to spend. I was looking at the Ghost but I'm wide open for suggestions.

Thanks,
Dyno

You might find a Neotek series I, II or III for that money. Some older Soundcraft, Studiomaster and such can be had cheap and modded to be really cool.

I'd recommend Tony Maimone's Ghost that he's selling out of Studio M in Brooklyn...

I would sugest a Midas Venice. http://www.midas-venice.com/ It's pretty small and not packed with features but I love the preamps and the EQ. The drawbacks are unballanced inserts, no 100mm faders, and the 32 input is really a 24 input + 4 stereo inputs. but still a great sounding little mixer.

Thanks for the replys so far...I'll check out your suggestions. I do want a board with some automation (faders).

I'm in the same situation. I picked up an Otari Concept 1 for about $7k. I'll keep using the HDR and will miss some of the d8b's conveniences, but the Otari sounds a lot better to me.

I use a Tactile Technology M4000 (well, two of 'em, really) and adore it. Digitally controlled all analog signal path - quite a high-end console for the $.
(I even started a little user forum for them... not much action there, but not many of us have these cool, but obscure consoles.)
They've been sub-$10k for a while now. The moving fader version is the only way to go if you're gonna do anything other than snapshot automation.
Also, a company in Germany recently surfaced with complete consoles, parts and everything - so we're back in the service loop. Addionally, my tech has spent a lot of time on mine repairing/upgrading my second input cage, and he's gotten quite adept on it. He works out of P.A.D - so he's quite accessible.
he took a duck in the face at two and hundred fifty knots.
