Hi Team

Does anyoneknow where I can get a replacement tape cartridge for an EchoPlex? How long do they last? This cartridge is a mess.

Don't know if this is a good deal or not. It's not my auction, so don't think I'm trying to get away with a plug or anything. But I found this on ebay.

You should be able to find one around portland. I dunno, maybe I live in a fantasy land, but when I need one in austin, I tool down to "ray hennigs heart of texas music", and he always has a new one in stock, just like he has for the last 40 years, or whatever. (they DO still make 'em) PLUS, ray tells me how, in the early 80's, he was selling used echoplexes for what he has to charge for a replacement tape now. (25-30 bucks) nothin like gettin a bizzare history lesson along with yer purchase.
If you keep coming up empty handed, let me know and I'll give you rays # and he'll sell you one. (he could sell a shovel to a bulldozer)

Hey
they are fairly easy to take apart and reload......reload with 456 as 499 and other newer tapes are too thick...
take the cart off of the machine.
remove the clear plastic part.
take a look at how the tape is wound and the where the oxide faces.
get rid of the old tape!
gently wind some new tape between the 2 plastic hubs.
be careful not to wind the tape too tight on the spools.
can be shorter then the amount in there)
Dont close the loop up with edit tape till you put the cart back on and see how much slack you have. You can pull the 2 ends thru the tape path and see what needs to be cut.
the machine will take care of a little slack once it's running but dont leave too much.

the little hubs can come off easily when you are winding the tape thru them
you can put a bit of tape(masking/scotch) the tops of them to prevent them from coming off and then remove the tape once you are done

you will most likely do it with oxide on the wrong side at least once....
and you will laugh

I thought I read fulltone was going to put out a rework of the echoplex and an improved tape cartridge(that would be available as a replacement as well) Maybe you could check the fulltone site.

there was talk from the folks at weber vst about a similar product, I wonder if they ever got that off the ground.

Kinda' like my Plex. It was made a coupla' years ago. I don't know if they still make 'em. Guyatone makes a Roland-like tape delay. It's $750, I think.

Long live tape delay. Now, about plate reverbs. Still want one.
