Re: JoeMeek ThreeQ
I thnk he might be talking about the new one that's just recently out.
I wanna know about it too. I heard the prototype of it and the new TwinQ @ AES last year and it was my favorite pre I heard there (accept the Chandler stuff, which was awesome, but unattainable).
So has anyone bought and used the NEW ThreeQ and are there any clips?

Oh yes, I mean the brand new ThreeQ.
Re: JoeMeek ThreeQ
Ah, the cardinal sin of inquiring about a preamp that is under $1000 per channel. There are no search results yet because the product is too new.
I was talking to Jake at Humbucker Music and he heard that the latter stage of JoeMeek production had some design and QC issues that were going to be rectified when the new product line came out. I was trying to find a used MQ3 and he suggested I wait for the new ones to come out.
I haven't experienced this preamp yet either and would be interested to hear what anyone who has used it actually thinks. Also the Groove Tubes Brick, another newie.

Re: JoeMeek ThreeQ
ah, sorry. they've been around for so long, people call em all variations of "3 + Q + Meek"
i didn't know there was a BRAND NEW one.

I'm very happy with mine, but what do I know, I'm just a duffer. At $200 US, I think it's a great value for what it costs. I use it with a Roland 1880.
Re: JoeMeek ThreeQ
Do you find the EQ and compression to be useful? Or do you mostly use the preamp?
The thing with the older Meek EQs is the low EQ ends at like 200 HZ but the bottom end of the sweepable mid starts at like 800 HZ, so there's this big "mud hole" you can't get at to scoop out. I read (in Tape Op actually) that there was a mod for those, but I was curious if they redesigned the EQ in the newer version.

Re: JoeMeek ThreeQ
Looks like they fixed the EQ problem The low frequency is fixed at 80Hz, and the mid sweeps from 300Hz to 5k.
Re: JoeMeek ThreeQ
In my brief experience so far, the compressor is pretty useful. It can go from really squashing the sound (I guess the classic "Joe Meek" sound) to something more like a limiter, though for the latter it's a bit more coloured than the RNC in its "subtle" mode or whatever that is. Still, I find the compressor to be really usable and surprisingly versatile. The EQ is to my mind the weakest link, but it's still a cut way above what I've got in my 1880, so I use it here and there, but not nearly as often as just the preamp and the compressor. I've been trying to focus more on mic placement and the original sound source to achieve the EQ I want lately.
So far, I've used it for bass direct (I like it a lot for that), electric guitar through a Studio Projects B1 (again, very useable), vox (works fine), snare through an SM57 (easy to find a useable sound).
Compared to most of the stuff in its price range I think it kicks ass (especially if you're into 60s-70s pop/garage or power pop), and I wouldn't be surprised if Behringer soon came out with a knockoff. The reason I got it is it's about the only preamp in its price range that doesn't have some worthless tube stage. Plus it's got a nice compressor and a pretty useable EQ.
I'm just a hobbyist, and it's clearly aimed at that market judging by the price.
