Mic em up as if they're regular toms, on top w/ dynamics, pan them across the spectrum (for the silly roto tom effect). If stereo effect doesn't matter, any old condenser will do.

The drummer must wear a headband and wrestling shoes or you will never get a proper roto tom sound.

Also helps if the drummer is wearing cycling gloves and one dangly feather ear ring...

With a 3 tom setup, a spaced pair based on the gap between the drums can get the job done if you don't want a super wide stereo thing...
I thought this club was for musicians. Who let the drummer in here??

If you've got the time, maybe try micing from under? Kinda like internal micing. Might get a little bit more iso and probably more tone.

Weren't Alex Van Halen's miced that way? Or am I totally unremembering that?

I have some rototoms, I haven't recorded anything with them yet, but I have some. They're really big like a 16" and an 18" or something. They sound really huge. And I do wear cycling gloves and a single feathered earring when I play them. You gots to.

And you definitely need to put a fan under his high hat, aimed at his head, so you can get maximum hair-puff effect.

And if the bass player is wearing a black leather vest with no shirt, even better. Especially if he has a beer gut. The fatter, the better...

I like micing single headed toms from underneath the drums, but it would kinda depend on how many mics you've got and how many rotos.

And it doesn't matter what he wears while playing them... as long as it's spandex... oh and he has to cover up with a nice satin jacket after.

If they are part of a kit, Roto Toms actually cut really well, so there should be plenty in the overhead, and maybe put any kind of spot mic near them in case they need to be a little more up front. If its just an overdub, stick a 57 on them and you should be fine. As longs as you do not overload your mic pres they are pretty hard to mess up.

Splash reverb on them for that classic sound.
