Do RNC Compressors usually act kind of funny?

i bought a new RNC compressor off of ebay recently and i hooked it up last week. everything seems to sound o.k. but every now and then it makes these clicking noises and shows a signal spike even when there is no signal. anyone ever have a similar experience or is perhaps something oddly screwy about mine. by the way, i am a beginner so please forgive if this is common knowledge.

Nope, it shouldn't do that.

However because the RNC uses unbalanced cables, if there are any noise sources in your studio, you could be picking up radio frequency interference or electromagnetic interference. This could be anything from nearby radio towers to CRT monitors to light dimmer switches etc. Best approach is to use the shortest cables possible.

However from what you've said there may very well be something wrong with the RNC. Know of any good local repair shops?

No. I don't think it should be doing that. Or at least mine doesn't do that.

I got mine on eBay, and it's rather distorted on bass (yup, I read the FAQ on the release time thing, and still), but sounds OK on most other stuff.

I wonder if they are a bit touchy and easy to damage?

the clicking is a known issue and is normal. it's mentioned in the rnc manual. it happens mostly when there's alot of bass present in the signal and the release setting is too fast. if you use a slower release setting the clicking will go away.

he said it happens with no signal... doesn't sound like the bass issue.

I read (i THINK on this board) about someone who fried their RNC and had this issue- the clicking and spiking with no audio present. I can't remember the details though, if it was a power spike that did it, or what. Search for RNC and see if you can pull up that thread, if not, just contact FMR

It's not exactly like yours and the only answer given was to send it in. You might PM the guy who had the problem and see what happened with it.

I had my RNP crap out, but FMRAudio took care of it. Just call them up and they'll ask you to send it in. I didn't even get charged

I have 2 both used and they work rather well.

I have yet to hear mine crap out w/ too much bass. I missed the part in the manual about the release being too fast on low freq. stuff, can result in clicking. However I'm very glad this was pointed out to me. Maybe since my manual is from the first model they did not include that part yet.

The only time I got a pop and spike is if I hit the "bypass" button. Which is kind of a pain, but I just turn my monitors or phones down whenever I switch back and forth between bypass and normal.

I get the crapping out on bass thing, and sometimes the only thing that works is switching to "really nice" mode AND using a super long release value (like over 1 sec.) That usually makes the distorting go away but you're stuck with a long release.

Mark is really nice, he'll even stay on the phone with you while you sit there and twiddle knobs until you're more satisfied with the results.

I own two and use them to death (well, they haven't actually died yet and they've been uuused, bro) and I have not exprerienced the "click" phenom....however....

...as to the distortion with bass -- yes. I don't usually track bass per se with the RNC, preferring more of a bass machine like the symetrix 501, but even with heavy bass response with acoustic guitars I'd get the dreaded distortion. The only thing that worked is hitting the Super Nice mode button. I only learned that after reading about it here in a TapeOp post a few months ago, so thank you! to whoever that was. It's like night and day -- distortion present or disortion gone! Apart from that....good god, it's da sheeet!
