tonight, i had a few minutes to mess around so i opened up a new session in PT, put up the royer stereo mic in front of the kit (about 10 feet back). i then patched the mic into a pair of neve 1064s and then into a dbx 166sl (i think.. it's the big blue one). i came close to distorting the neves. huge sound. really huge. i could totally use that as drum sounds. no other mics. but i just love setting up mics. anyone else have any comments or other little experiences?

Re: an obviously good combo!
take that same set up, stick a 57 a foot off the snare, crank some 5K on it, add a big condenser on the kick, compress with a long release and you could be on the verge of the coolest thing ever if your room sounds good and your drums are tuned. the relationships you chose between regular dynamics/ribbons/condensers will pretty much determine what kind of depth you'll get out of your drum sound.
add The Star Wars Kid replete with glowing oar for distraction and you should be good to go.
