ok, i assume the channel inserts are +4. when run a cable into the adat (which is definitly -10) the signal is way loud. i need to "bump" this signal down to a usable level. the elco snake somebody metioned wont work on this mackie mixer. what are my options?

The inserts are pre fader and pre eq.

Clicked half way in... hmmm, click it in so the tip is just in.
I can't find anything in any manual anywhere that says that the inserts are +4 or -10. The line ins are but nothing on the channel inserts.
I found a little blurb about it on the Mackie site. It was in a PDF document, I have the link at home but I'm at work and I can't remember the link.

I found it again. http://mackie.com/pdf/1202vlzpro_ss.pdf
It's on page 5 and you have to look good because what is written is all mashed together.

By default the direct out on the Mackie should be +4 you need to change the ADAT to being +4.

kayagum,

This setup uses the convertors on the ADAT machine to provide 8 more I/O channels to the 828. You do need preamps in front of the ADAT convertors.
My bad- didn't see the lightpipe connections on the first pass.

I stand corrected so how do you switch it to -10?

Thats a good question. I was thinking maybe how you inserted the cable but that would be weird and make no sense.

On my Mackie 24/8 there is a switch on the inputs and outputs (on the rear of the board) to toggle between +4/-10...

Dunno, that might be useless info since it is not the same as yours.

It's just a range of connectors (EDAC ELCO). The input stage on the ADAT is different for the (balanced +4) ELCO input than it is for the (unbalanced -10) 1/4" inputs. Ditto for outputs.

The 56 pin male connector is what you want on the ADAT side, and if you're using channel inserts you'll have to either solder custom 8 x 1/4" TRS ("stereo") plugs on the Mackie side, or pay someone to do it for you. (E.g. Mr Patchbay or your local audio shop.)

Your other option is to buy 8 line level matchers, but that's probably not very cost effective.

Cheers + good luck Jp!

Johann

P.S. I have an ELCO snake with XLR connectors on it. If you want the snake itself I could sell it to you for $25 Canadian + shipping, after I cut off the XLR connectors. It would then be up to you to solder (or find someone to solder) TRS connectors to the Mackie side. Email me at jtienhaara AT yahoo DOT com if you're interested.

I don't think the line level on the inserts is switchable on the 1202. the best solution is to bring the ADAT up to +4 with the elco connector. I probably should have elaboated a little in my earlier post, I have a similar setup. A Mackie 1402, Blackface ADAT, and MOTU 828. My Elco snake Has 16 1/4 balanced sends and returns fanning out from the elco connector. All my in's and out's from the mackie go into a patchbay (all but the mic inputs rather) In the event that i need more channels than ten (never) i'll patch into the adat throught the front of the patchbay. i.e the channel 5 send from the mixer going into input 1 on the adat. then back through the bay to monitor, or sometimes just monitor off the lightpipe.

Maybe you need one of these... http://www.ebtechaudio.com/lls-2des.html

Or, just get a new interface- if you really need more than 8 inputs
