Everyone's talking about Pet Sounds and SMiLE, but no one has mentioned Sunflower, a truly underrated post-SMiLE album.

Also, I don't think anyone's mentioned Jon Brion's Meaningless and Aimee Mann's I'm With Stupid and Bachelor No. 2 (both with Jon Brion). Good stuff, intricate mixes, well-executed.

Also, I think "Breaking The Girl" off RHCP's BloodSugarSexMagic is really captivating and intense for one of their "mellower" songs. My favorite track off that album and my favorite RHCP song. The mellotron just fucking fits and Chad's drumming throughout kicks my ass, especially the instrumental percussion break/solo with Flea.

The Books!
The Books!

"The Lemon of Pink" and "Thought for Food" are both incredible, beautifully organic sounding albums that deserve to be heard.

An incredible assimilation of samples from movies and old records, and cello, banjo, and guitar. Some songs are just ridiculously good, namely "The Lemon Of Pink," "There Is No There," "That Right Ain't Shit," "Take Time," "Enjoy Your Worries, You May Never Have Them Again," and "Motherless Bastard."

Someone please check these guys out.

I also like the sound of Blonde Redhead's Misery Is A Butterfly.

I don't think these were listed and they make me think everytime I put them on...
Jimi Hendrix Experience - Axis: Bold As Love

Rites of Spring - S/T (It is probably more the actual performance than the mix, but I guess that is just how good the mix is.)

Sonic Youth - Sister

Fugazi - Steady Diet of Nothing

Fear Factory - Obsolete

The Faint - Danse Macabre (Pure Power!)

And I totally agree with The Shins, and have to add that just about all "The Cramps" recordings blow me away.

Eh, bdp, I don't think anyone mentioned Metallica's St. Anger... :lol:

But since this post goes on, I thought to add:

Lucinda Williams Car Wheels as it's so organic and rocking;

The Church's "Reptile" because the the delayed guitars and the room sound kill me every time;

Billy Joe Shaver's Live at [Some] Bar produced by Brendan O'Brian (who also plays on it) and who also does great work on the Pearl Jam records, Dan Baird, etc.; and,

Nirvana's Bleach (actually, I like anything I've heard Endino do, but especially that and his Mudhoney work.)
bandcamp;
blog.
I mix with olive juice.

True, true... but it's had such an absolute whipping from most forums - "whats with the snare, whats with the compression..." etc, that I thought it wiser to preempt the universal derision I'd recieve by making myself the black sheep before anyone else does.

And I agree with the Lucinda Williams mention.

Cheers,

bdp

To add to the post-Smile Beach Boys albums...I have to say that Friends and 20/20 blow me away. Some great Dennis Wilson songs on each, and my God, after listening to those two albums I want to write a dozen songs in 3/4 time.

Pearl Jam - Vs. (except for Elderly Woman... - it doesn't sound very good): no suprises here, one guitarist always on the left, the other always on the right, but what energy and everything sounds so natural to me.

Rage Agains the Machine - Evil Empire: same producer/engineer team as above (Brendan O'Brien/Nick DiDia). Some of my favorite drum sounds. My understanding is that both of these records were tracked mostly live.

Paul Simon - You're the One: oh man does this record sound perfect. Anyone want to study how to mix percussion? This is your record.

Steely Dan - Everything Must Go

Just a few I don't think I saw mentioned earlier.

XTC - Skylarking, and Calexico's Feast of Wire. Swerevedriver's Mezcal Head in which I still hear things I have not heard after 10 years of listening to that album. It was made for pot heads.
I know enough to know that I don't know what I am doing.
