SIMPLE tube amp scematics...?
SIMPLE tube amp scematics...?
so, I think I'm ready to try and build a tube head. I'd like to make something with, like 30 watts or more of output, and I don't need a lot of tone shaping, i.e., treble, mid, bass, presence, gain and master...
I just want to build a powerful tube head with one VOLUME and one TONE, that's it.
any tips to point me in the right direction would be awesome.

You might try a search for a tweed champ clone.

Re: SIMPLE tube amp scematics...?
Yow...that's kinda ambitious for a first tube amp. Especially if you want simple.30 watts or more of output
I built the P1 from the ax84 site last fall, and it's a little screamer. I added a master volume, and it's driving a Jensen Mod 8" speaker, all in a little pine box. They've got bigger stuff, but the designs aren't as mature.
If you need supplies, tubesandmore.com is having a 10% off sale through the end of September.

Check out http://www.angela.com for some simple schematics and plenty of parts.
Re: SIMPLE tube amp scematics...?
I would start with the AX-84 folks, as already recommended, or a kit, which a lot of places offer.
This guy has a tweed champ head kit that I made:
http://www.stf-electronics.com/
reasonably priced, sounds awesome.
A champ, with just one 6V6 output tube, can be pretty darn loud for practice and recording, though it probably won't keep with a loud 4-piece band.
In addition to the ax-84 folks, check out this message board, it's all amp builders. Many experienced nice folks:

This site has some great kits. I made his Tweed Deluxe a few years ago and it sounded great. It was too much kit for me, though, I really botched it! But his Champesque kits are likely to be good, too.
Also, this guy self-published a couple of good books on making simple amps:

Volume 2 is also for sale on eBay right now.

Re: SIMPLE tube amp scematics...?
Bassmans are cool. but I'm hoping to build, like an oversized musicmaster bass amp or Magnatone 415, etc. super simple. one input/channel, volume and tone...only. oh, and any tube compliment other than 6L6. preferably el34. can I just build the power section of a plexi and than build a stripped down champ pre...? guess I need to do some more homework.

Re: SIMPLE tube amp scematics...?
It's really easy to build a single channel Bassman, and to change the pin config to work with EL34s. The champ pre isn't that different from some of the Bassman pre's but you get tone controlls. You have to use a phase inverter anyway if youre not going to build a single ended amp.
I've found Fender parts are cheeper and easier to come by too.
Plexi's are cool to, maybe try a JTM45.
