Ampeg Jet+ great cheap recording amp

Post by the brill bedroom » Sat Sep 25, 2004 12:52 pm

For anyone looking for a great amp for recording- assuming your budget doesn't allow for an AC30 or a boutique amp or something- I have one of those 15 watt Ampeg Jet reissues from about 5 years ago. It's always been a decent amp for $250, but a while back Rodgr told me to change the speaker and it would be a lot better. I just put some new Groove Tubes EL84s in it and a Weber Blue Dog speaker I got off of Craigslist. Holy shit, does that little bugger sound great now. it's got a real Vox ciminess to it that I never heard before. $250 for the amp, $100 for the speaker, $30 for the tubes (and I haven't even figured out how to bias them or anything) and this thing is blowing my mind.

I love this amp as well. EL84s and Reverb for days.

If you can describe how to get the old speaker out to replace it, Corin, a fellow Tape Opper would love to know. I don't have the Tremolo Lounge specimen in front of me at the moment.

Sorry, Rog, it's me (Corin). I figured it out. Essentially. you take out every screw you see and take the whole chasis out.

Great new screen name, Corin. Didn't I tell you to take the chassis out, you fool!!!

I'm listening to "Good Night" by the Beatles right now. Just thought you'd appreciate that.

I use two of these live. Totally beat my reissue AC15 at 1/5th the price.

And I do! I'll see your "Good Night" and raise you a really bizarre version of "Cry Baby Cry" done by Ramsey lewis on his album, "Mother Nature's Son"- all instrumental versions of White Album songs done with crazy string arrangemenst and Fender Rhodes.

Thanks for the screen name kudos. That's the name of what I'm working on right now, but I'm not sure if it's a band name or an album titile.

I love this amp.

I put a vintage 30 in mine, but i prefered the original speaker.
I like that cheap speaker breakup.

I'd like to try some other speakers, but the chassis is too big to fit a bigger magnet.

Ampegs are some of the most underated amps. I've been using an original Revererocket with a Vintage 30 and EL84's using the yellow jacket adapters. The thing sounds sweet with the original 7591A's or the EL84's. My friend has a Gemini 1 which sounds even more incredible.
