Albums you missed the boat on
Albums you missed the boat on
Ever hear an album that for some reason you just didn't hear or get into when it was new, and then it absolutely kicks your ass years later?
Recently a friend gave me a copy of Radiohead's "The Bends" and I've hardly had it out of my cd player since. What a great album! What the fuck was I thinking not listening to this when it was new?
Anybody else?

Wilco- Summerteeth
The first thing I heard from Wilco was Can't Stand It and frankly I couldn't stand it so Wilco was not given another chance. Then I heard a few tracks from the same album this summer and asked, "Who is this? it's great!". Now I'm hooked, Wilco are fantastic and for the record I love the songs and sound of A Ghost Is Born.
others would be Morphine and U2.

Re: Albums you missed the boat on
I seem to miss the boat on most music that?s popular, or hip. Hype and facetime kind of turn me off, so I didn?t get into the following albums until after the fact, after the frenzy had died down and I got a chance to just hear the music without the bullshit:
Strokes: Is This It?
Weezer: Weezer, Pinkerton
Don Caballero: American Don
Pixies: Entire catalog
New Pornographers: Mass Romantic
Destroyer: Streethawk: A Seduction
Air: Entire catalog
Bright Eyes: EC
Cake: EC
Cure: EC
Neutral Milk Hotel: ITAOTS
Interpol: TOTBL
And on?.and on?.and on?.

I felt like an idiot when I finally got into Stereolab about 5-6 years after my friends had all told me over and over how much I would like them. I was way behind on that.

I get most things late. It's more rare for me to have the new cool thing. Hell I bought a Bobby Gentry collection this weekend. She recorded her last record in 1974.

Neutral Milk Hotel. I love 'in the aeroplane over the sea". It isn't incredibly old (it was recorded in 97 or so) but I just "discovered" it about 6 months ago. I even bought it twice - on vinyl and from itunes.
Sonic Youth. I had always found them too chaotic and noisy. I've been listening to 'goo' lately. Now I like the chaos and noise.

elliott smith XO
My wife had it for years and i recall trying 2x over the 1st year trying to like it, and i just didn't. Then last year i popped it in again and it stayed in my CD player all summer. I even use it now as a reference CD. Weird.
Other choices -
Me too on the Pixies, I didn't start liking them until maybe 1998
MBV Loveless - though i think it was worn out its welcome
Shudder to Think - took about a year before they rocked my world - at first I thought they were the weirdest band i ever heard

DITTO! I'm a big dipshit because when I got it, I thought it was recent. I told a friend that "this is the first time in a while that I've been THIS excited about a NEW record"... he said, "uhh...... dude, that came out about 6 years ago."Kevin H wrote:Neutral Milk Hotel. Have you heard the live Mountain Goats cover of Two Headed Boy? It's pretty rough, but charming. it's here.

Ill second the Bends as well. I bought it when it came out, but really only listened to Fake Plastic Trees

I initially thought the same. They were playing a couple songs from it on KEXP radio on frequent rotation so I assumed it was new until I got the record.subatomic pieces wrote: DITTO! It is rare that a "new" band affects me in a way like this. I wish I could go back in time and see them play. I haven't looked into it (despite the ease of the internet) but I hear Jeff Magnum has given up music...sad. Brilliant songs, lyrics, etc. I love how the production is raw and down to earth. It is everything I love about music.
Re: Albums you missed the boat on
I had to go back to these later to appreciate them. At the time I had their 7" on revelation and thought it was one of the best things ever. They're great live. The albums seemed weak to me at the time. I heard songs from them recently and really like them. I especially like their cover of the smiths' "how soon is now." Better than the original.Everybody's X wrote:both quicksand albums

slowdive souvlaki
when i first heard these recordings my senior year of high school in 1996 they changed my life. they still continue to haunt me. while i haven't been fixated on that sort of sound, they did open me up to new ways of looking at music and you can't ask for anything better than that in an album.
