Re: D'yer Maker
Houses of the Holy is such a great album.
It still blows my mind listening to Zep rock out on "The Song Remains the Same", and then go into a beautiful balld like "The Rain Song".
"No Quarter" is such an awesome, creepy, moody song. I love how they used it in The Song Remains the Same Movie showing the boys as plundering pillaging horsemen.
I just love some of the lyrics on that album;
"I saw a lion he was standing alone with a todpole in a jar"
"Now I'm singing all my songs to the girl who won my heart, she is only 3 years old and that's a real fine way to start"
"These are the seasons of emotion and like the winds they rise and fall"
"Many dreams come true, and some have silver linings. I live for my dreams and a pocket full of gold."
I gotta go out and buy that CD

Zeppelin all the way baby!
I was lucky enough to see Page and Plant on the No Quarter tour and they blew my head off...completely.
They are definitely called "gods of rock" for valid reasons.

Re: D'yer Maker
this is prolly common knowledge, but...
i understand that the beat to dyer maker was supposed to be reggae. bonham couldnt do it tho. for some reason he couldnt feel the groove that way. eventually he was just like FUCK IT and recorded what he did.
i think about that a lot

Re: D'yer Maker
Just to let you know the lyric "saw a lion with a tadpole, etc.," is actually "saw alladin with a tadpole...."
Yea, I read in an interview w/page years and years ago(and also JPJ) that Bonham couldn't relate to the idea of a reggae(keep in mind that reggae just wasn't in his worldview in 1972), and he just got pissed/frustrated, and did a 1950's drum part, purposely over-emphasizing everything(again, he was literally pissed off when they recorded the drum part), playing loudly, and putting big fills in where he could've layed out a little more.
Thing about ZEP, is it doesn't even matter what song/album you bring up, the whole things rocks, from the ryhthm section, to the arrangement, sounds, vocal, etc, they truly set the bar for everyone else to measure up to.
Matter of fact, the 80's had to re-invent themselves and sound different, rather than negatively compare with the A-level shit that came out of the 70's(you know like the best stuff by the Who, Elton, Queen, etc.)
Just my opinion!

1: Took my wife on vacation to the Caribbean.
2: Jamaica (with cockney accent: "D'yer maker" or "did ya make her")?
1: Nah, she wanted to go.

Re: D'yer Maker
You just solved one of my lifelong riddles. Thank you.
There was a lot of mescaline going around when that album came out. Between the music and the artwork, the album became wired into my nervous system.
The first five Zepplin albums are drop-dead classics, and the "No Quarter" video (soon to be on DVD!) is breathtaking.

I've had HoH since i was in the 5th grade, so about 21 years and for the first time today, I heard the phone ringing on "the Ocean." You hear it twice during the guitar solo " I don't know....oh oh yeah" It's in there.
I know about the squeaking drum pedal and the plane flying over head but never heard that phone before.
Also someone on the board mentioned that it was mixed on an API..adding to the already great drum sound I'm sure.

When I was 15 or so, I always used to get up to grab the phone when I was listening to this, until I finally heard it. One of Ice Cube or NWA's songs had a phone ring that made me do this too.

Re: D'yer Maker
Look for a clean copy of the HOTH LP with the initials "RL" in the deadwax. That's Mr. Robert Ludwig, who cut a great LP back then... rivals the official CD remaster, IMHO.
Re: D'yer Maker
I guess it started out as a reggae thing but in the end the only thing reggae about D'yer Maker is the keyboard part.SteveU wrote:Yea, I read in an interview w/page years and years ago(and also JPJ) that Bonham couldn't relate to the idea of a reggae(keep in mind that reggae just wasn't in his worldview in 1972), and he just got pissed/frustrated, and did a 1950's drum part, purposely over-emphasizing everything(again, he was literally pissed off when they recorded the drum part), playing loudly, and putting big fills in where he could've layed out a little more.

Re: D'yer Maker
I've said it before and posted it many times on this board, "When the levee breaks" is the shittiest, smallest Zepplin drum sound ever. "D'yer Maker" is the undoubtedly the biggest. Helios console and a fantastic conception. Should be THE model for rock drums.
And by the way, I groan loudly whenever some drummer mentions "When the levee breaks" as an example of a huge drum sound. It's an example of a poorly recorded room mic and that's about it. Somehow, someone thought it should go the distance on a full-length release.
