Man, there were some pretty fine Stevie Wonder singles as well.....just pick any of them...they're all great.

and someone mentioned Stax.....just throw Chess, Motown and all those other 60s blues and Soul labels in there as well...
The only true great mic on this planet is the Shure SM-57. It is the most consistant in not totally sucking of anything ever built. All other mics are "application dependant".

You know....speaking of all this single talk....

How great must it have been back in the day to walk into a studio off the street with a great song. Record it live to two track, three or even mono. Grab a paycheck and hear the song on the radio the very next day.
Not to get into the topic of the labels ripping off the artists in some cases, but that's just so cool.
It really makes you think how cool it was back then to just to go to a new town and hear all their stuff on the radio....Memphis stations, Detroit, Nashville, New Orleans.....
Now I can go anywhere and not only hear the same 20 or so songs on every station, but even the same DJ's that are just syndicated everywhere.
Makes me hate Clear Station.

This is the correct answer. If it isn't, it should be. When the snare drops on "You Really Got Me"... ye gods.

I really like, "I Told Every Little Star" by Linda Scott
Also "Baby Let's Play House" By Elvis, has gotta be up there, infact any of the sun sessions.

Both of those are just so...rock'n'roll! You forget about the fact that the quality of the reordings are so awful because the songs are so good. It's difficult to contain myself when I hear that rough/ violent opening on All Day And All Of The night and of course the snare drop! Now I'm fiending for some Kinks.

I've always had a thing for "Baby Don't Go" by Sonny & Cher.
A real pop gem.

I'm gonna have to say Epic by Faith No More, since I feel obliged to pick something from my generation.

Excellent. I'll add Bauhaus' "Bela Lugosi's Dead", which was only released on singles compilations and live albums. Sorta kick-started a sub-sub-subculture.

hey there's a good one. Mike Scarpelli, the crazy cat who owned the neighborhood shop gave me a promo copy of that. I even dug the B-side, Walkin' The Quetzal. It the Spector tradition it was an instro that would never get played.

But actually I'd have to toss up Don't Worry Baby as my choice. Still there are must be heaps I could think of. Probably a good reason I have 10k singles in the studio. Just in case someone thinks they are hot shit, I can pull something out and shut 'em up,

you are an entirely decent individual. I'm dropping the smiths and going with the Dramatics 'Your Love is Strange'. unbelievable. it was never on a record. it's the gem of the second stax box set. here's a not so hot clip of it (it's missing the best part!):

Why do people throw around labels like stax, motown, etc and nobody EVER mentions Stiff Records? Go out and buy the box set Ryko put out a couple years ago, throw it in your CD changer and you're listening to some of the best, most eclectic singles ever recorded. Beats the Nuggets into the ground.
