Re: Gear That's Made A Marked Difference
Getting my very own Studer A827 2" machine changed everything for me.
As far as compressors go, I cant imagine a world where I didnt have a 33609 in the rack!
The other stuff that changed my mixes forever:
Quitting alcohol.
EH NY2A
The oktava MC012's on toms. I ALWAYS had EQ on the toms until I found these little, cheap, wonderful godsends for toms.
My first experience 10 years ago or more with an effectron.
The avalon U5 DI.
The manley tube reference pre.
Learning how all that crap works helped as well...

thanks for the reply chris, cgarges wrote:I got my first one not long after they came out. I was working at a studio that had a decent compliment of budget stuff, but I had trouble getting this one vocal to sit right on a project I was doing that had a decent budget. So I went to a local retailer and talked to one of the guys about renting something. I thought for sure I'd walk out of there with a Vox Box, but this guy was pretty adamant about the Distressor working great for what I needed, Boy was he right. I couldn't believe the amount of gain reduction I could get without much artifacting (this was back when my other option was DBX, Alesis, or VLA). And the way it DID alter the sound seemed so "rock and roll." I loved it and bought one for myself not long after. It's such a flexible unit that it could handle any gain reduction requirements and any sort of weirdness I wanted, too (back when I thought I was Tchad Blake).pedrohead wrote:i'm curious you guys that said distressor. i've been thinking about getting one, what is it giving you guys that you like so much more than was there before? interested...
It's a really great unit on which to learn compression.

so for someone like me, who mixes entirely ITB since i don't have the extra DA/AD that i would trust to send my signal through (ix-nay on the 001 DA), would the distressor still be good to have on the way in, or would it tend to be something, like many effects, that you may use a little too liberally and now that it's down on 'tape', wish you wouldn't have used so much? "sounded better yesterday than it did today" kind of thing.

- cd burner: i remember when i got one and could check this out mixes on cd instead of cassette? amazing! a cd player in the car was huge too.
does anyone else remember having to pay like 30 bucks for a ref cd? nuts.
- 1272's: guitars!
- dynaudios - more balanced mixes immediately.

Oh my god yes. And that was like 1996. Seems like so long ago!!!!! I treated those things like gold and never wasted them.bigtoe wrote: does anyone else remember having to pay like 30 bucks for a ref cd? nuts.
Now I can't tell you how many unmarked CD-Rs I have littering this desk as I type.

Re: Gear That's Made A Marked Difference
So true! I still have the CDR's that were like the most precious thing ever in '95!
Insane! less than ten years ago, and we were fraking out about it!(and paying lots of money for it). Now, like rodger said, I have like a zillion CDR's on spools that I should probably just throw away, but I cant seem to bring myself to do it!
I should have said a CD burner as well. Good one!

the distressor would be just fine on the way in, i think you'd just have to discipline yourself to not lay into it too hard all the time.pedrohead wrote: thanks for the reply chris,

anyway, the distressor is my pick too. love it.
also the benchmark dac-1.
and i have to admit the DAW too. i use wavelab and it totally opened things up for me when i started using it 5 years ago or so...
Re: Gear That's Made A Marked Difference
yeah peeps - showing the age. anyone else get in the car and have 35,000 cdrs chucked in the back seat for a week while mixing? hilarious! I spool them all and stack them in my closet! for why? just in case! ni case of what? i have no idea! i still make 4 cdr backups too! hahaha...it's kind of like not trusting tape when it came out!

Re: Gear That's Made A Marked Difference
Just like MoreSpaceEcho said, I'm sure that will occur a bit when you first get it. Especially that box in particular. But like anything else, over time you'll learn it. It's a such a versatile piece of equipment that there's a lot to learn, but I don't think you'll ever not love it. It's a really great tool.pedrohead wrote:would the distressor still be good to have on the way in, or would it tend to be something, like many effects, that you may use a little too liberally and now that it's down on 'tape', wish you wouldn't have used so much? I think the first one I ever got was either $75 or $100. Or maybe it was $100 for two copies. Totally silly.bigtoe wrote:does anyone else remember having to pay like 30 bucks for a ref cd? nuts.
